It's the Lake District- what do you expect? I have been in some remote areas in Switzerland where service was much the same.
That said, nothing beats the Swiss transport system, any country would benefit greatly from having the same. The building of railways was partly the reason for British Colonial dominance.

| | | | | Is it so remote? It does, however, attract some 12 million tourists a year ...

3 years and still waiting?
A Sustainable Transport Framework
In 2008 we commissioned consultants to produce a sustainable transport framework for the Lake District. They examined the current challenges, opportunities and constraints and examined good practice elsewhere. They then proposed a framework around which a future transport strategy can be built and made some suggestions to be considered for the strategy.
Potential solutions
A wide range of potential solutions have been suggested by partner organisations, businesses and the public such as:
Develop transport hubs to allow efficient interchange between parking, buses, boats, cycling and walking.
Improve traffic management.
Cycling and horse-riding networks that connect to the transport hubs.
Improve public transport including better integration of timetables and integrated tickets like London's Oyster card.
Develop networks of low carbon vehicles including cars, vans and buses. http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/index...csolutions.htm | This user would like to thank for this useful post:

LOL, I've been in Geneva since Feb now, and I slightly miss Transport for London, only because I'd lived there for years and know the system inside and out.
I do like the public transport here, but it gets a bit confusing when you need to change to another tram/bus/what ever and although the stop is the same name it's 40 metres away around the corner with no signs (not that I've seen them), in London they also have a 'walking map' for common long interchanges which looks easy by tube, but will take for ever (Bank to Liverpool St for example) on the tube and much easier to walk
Might be a useful thing over here, all in all the British Transport System is one of the best in the world at being complete and utter crap! In fact I reckon that as a huge result of mismanagement and underinvestment no one ever believes that they will get there according to the time table, so hence leave about 4 hours either side of the journey to compensate!
On the Swiss plus side, we had some friends over very shortly after we moved, I've v v v v v little french and there were 8 people in the party, 4 adults 4 children so a bit tight even in the 7 seater - it's decided 2 people will get train.
Train arrives on time, leaves on time, arrives at destination on time, pickup on time and arrives back on time - and this was a Sunday! A day when you'd expect nothing to work in good old blightly!
Just my two penneth worth!

Did someone earlier say it costs £18 to get to Heathrow from central London? Maybe they were thinking about one of the fake London airports, like Luton or Stansted.
Anyway, with an Oyster card, and off-peak, it costs £2.70. Peak is £4.50. http://oystercard.110mb.com/fares.htm | This user would like to thank adrianlondon for this useful post:

Ok - I recently had a very similar experience to the OP - except on a Saturday.
I live up in the wilds of Cumbria.
To cut a very long story short, the trains were all consecutively late (ticket £100 for me and my daughter) so got into Carlisle in time to miss last train to the westcoast (20:00)
Taxi: Carlisle to my parents' - £ 60. (30 miles)
And please don't even get me started on the return journey.... |

Taxi to Zurich airport (5kms) 51CHF.
That is all. | | | | | but how often would you genuinely require an airport cab in ZH versus requiring it in the UK, with so much public transport going to the airport even in the early hours?

Now if they ran at a loss for a while then maybe they'd generate huge trade and sell a pair of jeans an hour. | | | | | Ah yes, but they'd have to re-stock more often and have lots more work to do. And if you can get away with high prices, why reduce them?
