The "Tell us something we didn't know" thread

There's so much to choose from, but where to begin...? How about the one that moved me to start this thread - the straw that pushed the camel over the edge to mix metaphors.

I mean really, sometimes you have to wonder about 1) the people who do this research, 2) the people who write it up in their "news" headlines and 3) the people for whom this is/was actually news.

As if the tsunami of a couple of years back and Earthquake/tsunami in Japan recently wasn't enough to give Jo Public a bit of a heads up, the latest headline from Yahoo news:
Quote:
Millions 'at risk from earthquakes

No shit Sherlock... but then we find out - shock - horror...
Quote:
Millions of people in Europe, the Middle East and Asia are at risk from deadly tremors which can strike out of the blue in unmapped earthquake zones, scientists have warned.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/millions-ri...175919138.html

Wow. That's like radical man... gonna change the world forevah!

Smells like someone trying to justify their research grant IMO.

Up next: too much sun bathing gives you skin cancer...

What are your favourites/worst?

Edit: link added

William Hague calls on Gaddafi/Mubarek/Assad et al to respect human rights and International law... No Sheet Sherlock!!

I can just imagine those leaders thinking, I was going to instruct my army to mow down the protesters with anti-tank artillary, but given Hague's stern warning I may reconsider

Bernard Madoff on the dangers of the internet bubble and financial speculation:

"I don't like to see this type of activity. Eventually, if this bubble bursts, I think that people will be left holding the bag. I don't want to be around when that happens."

From the Wall Street Journal, Jan 14, 1999.
