Would you complain if you couldn't get on a plane without your passport?
No, because one cannot even get on a plane with out a passport or other form of government ID, unless you are flying a private craft.

One can however buy tickets and get on trains without being in physical possession of a demi-tarif card that they have.

If one has a halb tax for their child then they should contact the authorities and ask for judicial leniency for simply having made the mistake of not being in possession of it whilst on the train.

After all the police said that I could get my license when I was stopped if I couldn't find it. They didn't have to but they did. I did finally find it in my wallet, where it shouldn't have been

Be nice and contrite and contact the authorities and see where it gets you.

Re: unfair fine

a tip

if you happened to get on a bus after 8pm and had to buy a full priced ticket because you have forgotten to bring your Halbtax or GA card, make sure that the bus driver validate your ticket with his name and his work ID number. Without any validation on the said ticket, SBB will not reimburse back your money.

Re: unfair fine

New rules about fines for not having a ticket at all and only partially valid tickets as of June 1st:

Fines for not having a ticket at all will increase to CHF 90.- plus a lump-sum ticket price of CHF 10.-

For having an insufficient ticket (missing class-change, missing night-additional, missing zone or half-price if you have no half-tax abo, etc.) the fine will now be at CHF 70.- plus lump-sum ticket price of CHF 5.-

This after it was determined by the federal court, that it is unfair to treat fare-dodgers and customers with insufficient tickets alike.

Should you have a repeat experience, fines will increase as follows:

Wrong tickets: 1) CHF 70.- 2) CHF 110.- 3) CHF 140.-, plus lump-sums
Dodgers: 1) CHF 90.- 2) CHF 130.- 3) CHF 160.-, plus lump-sums

Some cities and transport-associations may have different rules.

Re: unfair fine

I take the boat from Stäfa to Wädenswil every morning (and back). When I've seen regulars forget their passes, they've just handed them a piece of scrap paper and said "Just write down your name and address here and show us the pass tomorrow!" No fines at all!

Then again, much of the boat staff is very nice to us commuters. This one captain I chit-chat with regularly, I saw her yesterday and she invited me up to the bridge of the boat for the ride home.

Re: unfair fine

The boat staff are far more friendlier and forgiving than the train staff ( S-Bahn ).

Same thing happened to one of my neighbours. She did get a fine for 80CHF, but she took the fine paper and the year pass she had forgotten at home to the SBB office, and they exchanged it to a fine of 5 CHF instead. Just try to go to a counter and explain what happened A smile and a valid case will bring wonders!
This is what I was going to say. Usually you take your fine & your pass to the relevant office and they waive it or lower it or whatever.

ETA: OK, OK, I should have read the whole thread, but you were off on passports & other misc.

I hope the OP gets her fine reduced and we all remember our passes!
