In fact, how many people contributing to this thread are actually dark-skinned? I guess Porsch is by his post, yet he is definitely in the "not-offended" camp, yet is probably the only one who would have the "right" to be offended.
I'm not black though, I'm brown....or off-white is the preferred term

So, after a bit of thought, I reckon as follows. Blackening up is offensive and shouldn't be done, for the mere fact that it's offensive to others...in America.
100% agree, you can't export your cultural sensitivities and expect others to behave the same way elsewhere, that's just ignorant.

And LiB from your own source: "Often, his black clothes and dirty face are attributed to the soot he collects as he goes down chimneys."

has absolut nil to do with the subject at hand.. never had, never will have, regardless of what origin a Schmutzli has, and there are several explanations (demon, chimney sweeper, coal miner), none has to do with the matter at hand.

And, just as a side note, I am sure no offence was intended at all on the part of the girls who dressed up, at carnival it is absolutely common and accepted to offend and not be offended - part of what is called "Narrenfreiheit" - fools freedom. You can make fun of just about anything and anyone, it's just a different culture, shocking huh?

But all your posts sound like you expect Switzerland to either be - or at the very least aspire to become like the US... not very culturally sensitive are you?

I said me. I am first generation English. And no where was there the culture of slavery more than in Africa itself, yet they certainly don't find black face reminiscent of intra-tribal kidnapping and slavery. It is an American phenomenon.

Well, except what they did to the Australian Aboriginals. . . .
I don't want to see people with grease-paint faces (or people with towels on their heads or feathers in their headbands saying "How" for that matter). A bit of awareness wouldn't go amiss Swiss!

Well, where I live, Schmutzli is a white man with a black painted face...which is wrong as it makes a mockery out of people that are different...but it is a cultural thing. Neither you, nor most Swiss find anything wrong with it....they're just being "creative" right? Ignorance is bliss I say.
In Holland St Nicholas (Sinterklaas) comes with "black Pete" (Zwarte Piet) a black man - the make up is full on here. I never noted any connotations of any ratial slur in this when I took part in these parades as a child and even now, AFAIK the tradition continues. Historically, he was Sinterklaas' helper and either took you away in his bag, if you'd been naughty, or gave you small gifts or sweets if you'd been good.

Either way, it wasn't about white men mocking black men, per se.

Quote:
Some sources indicate that in Germanic Europe, Zwarte Piet originally was such an enslaved devil forced to assist his captor, but the character emerged in the 19th century within the Netherlands as a companion of Saint Nicholas resembling a Moor.[1] Saint Nicholas is said to come from Turkey. The relation of Zwarte Piet with Haji Firuz is incredibly close, Haji Firuz is a traditional herald of Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebration, exactly black in the face and comes with Amoo Nowruz a white beared old man who brings gifts for the children counter part of Western Santa.
Ignorance is to be avoided...

90% of my life is turning "don't wants" into "do's". Whats your point? You don't like the French? Hey! That's racist!

I should probably rethink my Halloween costume of a baguette, a beret, a stripy t shirt and some garlic around my neck.

I was thinking of using some of my wife's powder to whiten up as well!

Don't forget to not bathe for a fortnight beforehand.

Re: Kids in blackface

In this case it shows that political correctness has been made widespread by an over-enthusiastic media but seems to be applied with a thick blanket of ignorance which makes matters worse. The majority see "race" in a situation then get all jumpy and indignant without actually stopping to understand what is going on.

Openly making fun of another race is offensive in most peoples eyes (including mine, just so you know, Mr LiB) but people dressing up to appreciate a culture and learn more should be acceptable. To some, it's an opportunity to tar with the same ignorant brush.

Re: Kids in blackface

My 2 rappens on this :

It's not offensive, It maybe a little careless for people who get offended by anything in this world. but whateva.

They are certainly not runing a white power rally and stuff, so I don't see what's wrong. When I was around 5 I was also blackfaced.

MayI point out that no one complained about this:

but did complain about the "R" word in the movie. Society bearings are too messed up to try to generalize them.

what about something like this, sold in US - is this less offensive and if so, why?
http://www.wondercostumes.com/geisha...e-ptafvpq.html

or, wait, there are plenty of Indian ones here, so it's not just the Swiss who should raise the awareness:
http://www.wondercostumes.com/indian-costumes-qsindian.html

I've also heard that toga parties are popular, surely some EF members should be offended that their ancestors are mocked this way?
