Yeah, but Swiss rhymes with amiss.

what about something like this, sold in US - is this less offensive and if so, why?

or, wait, there are plenty of Indian ones here, so it's not just the Swiss who should raise the awareness:

I've also heard that toga parties are popular, surely some EF members should be offended that their ancestors are mocked this way?

Golly ! I guess now is not a good time to mention what was on my marmalade jars as a kid, nor my sisters favourite soft toy. It's really hard hiding racism when you are only 8 years old.

I said me. I am first generation English. And no where was there the culture of slavery more than in Africa itself, yet they certainly don't find black face reminiscent of intra-tribal kidnapping and slavery. It is an American phenomenon.

I'm not sure what the reaction would be in africa were I to go around in black face.

If it were fancy dress day at school and you were 16? I'd think they'd be quite OK with it.

...Well, today I saw 2 white kids wearing beautiful African traditional clothing, but they had smeared dark brown paint all over themselves. It was shocking.
I agree. Not good.

I see it will be an uphill battle to raise sensitive, respectful, culturally-aware kids in this country, if these girls were allowed to leave their homes and go to school dressed in such an offensive manner.
Why? What does the behaviour of some girls - even if sanctioned by the school - have to do with how your kids behave?

No. Minus 1 million points for that particular school.

Africa is a big place, certainly there are probably some areas where it's considered acceptable. You would wonder why the clothes aren't enough. Do other cultures white up when impersonating europeans?

Because they're trying to be accurate, to look like Africans. I really don't get it.

That's it. Next time I see someone dressed up as a mad scientist, I'm going to give them a piece of my mind about their insensitivity!

There are good reasons why they don't.
Either it would make'em look like vampires or they would look like the village medicine man.

You don't get it because you missed the memo- nowadays you have to pretend that people don't have a different skin color at all, because to notice that they do makes you a racist. Nevermind melanin or any other such physical and biological differences.

We are all some kind of...transparent, sheer color now.
