You are expecting her to look at things the same way you do / take into consideration that things are different here while NOT accounting that she (and I, and Carrie F and others) see things differently. We are accustomed to having to consider what may offend and shy away from it and are amazed / shocked to be reminded that it's not necessary here.

!
Peg, I see your point, but she did not say "Isn't it shocking how different the cultures can be and something considered offensive on another continent is apparently not offensive here". She said that this was "disgusting level of willful ignorance".

wouldn't it be logical for us males to develop the ability to change color? I'd love to have chameleon skin...
You could always paint yourself another colour, such as black.

Right, so about 30 000 years is is the current concensus, as far as I can remember.
Kind of off-topic I know, but the latest estimates put the earliest humans making it to Northern Europe about 700,000 years ago.

Re: evolutionary advantages of different skin colours this is widely accepted as being a trade off between UV protection and production of vitamin D. Evolutionarily speaking darker skin is better in sunnier environments as it provides more protection, but is less good where it is less sunny as it is less efficient at producing vitamin D (this applies to pretty much all species of mammal).

Just don't wear any traditional Africal dress when you do.

I'm sorry, no. There isn't an ice cubes chance in hell that anybody's "evolving" without considering intermixing of races.

edit: based on a quick search, it's actually 70 000 - 120 000 years apparently.
Correct.

And I'm certainly not ruling out the "inter-mixing" of races to account for some of the melanin decrease. But I think you need to keep in mind that, at one point, ALL humans were dark-skinned Africans, and so any degree of inter-mixing would have always still produced dark or medium skin tones were it not for migratory shifts and the resulting adaption to changes in climate.

Re: Kids in blackface

Africa is not a country, its the 2nd largest and 2nd most populous continent on the earth. With 61 territories, the continent of Africa is extremely diverse in people and traditions.

The girls were wearing traditional African attire. Was it of North, West, Sub-Saharan or East African inspiration?

If stereotypical images of 'tribal Africa' are promoted in the schools, it does reach a level of willful ignorance.

And that's what makes it ignorant and pathetic.

I know that I certainly didn't drop all the expectations and anticipations I'd developed "back home" as soon as I applied for my first permit, I'm sure no one else did either.

So, to groan at her for her "knee jerk" reaction just proves that "you" still have preconceived notions about what people should expect and anticipate from others as well. You're the same... groan yourself.
Your expectations and anticipations are wonderful. Assuming all people in all parts of the world will share them is ignorant and stupid. If the OP's post was more descriptive and less prescriptive they would have probably gotten an easier time. Children in Switzerland wearing dark makeup to look like a dark skinned person in the context of a fancy dress party is anything but racist and calling them racist is offensive. Again, if the OP came from Nepal and assumed that her Nepalese cultural sensibilities were the same here as they are at home, she would probably have forgiven for being a bit silly, but remember - the US is infamous the world over for cultural imperialism, so you'll forgive us our prejudices here; those are prejudices that actually are relevant in Switzerland. As ever, context is king.

I've not read for a while but has the thread gone to the 'Out of Africa' theory yet?

well I guess that would be the OP's fault, as she is the eyewitness.... I fail to read where the girls stated their attire as "tribal african"

Nah, it's a stereotype. Nothing wrong with that unless you're making policy based on it and even then, government needs to generalise across broad categories in order to provide services. When I was a kid we learn about each country through broad themes. I remember learning about Denmark and it was all butter and bacon and we had to bring in a Lurpak wrapper and learning all about the Lurs - the bronze age horn on the front. My cousins are Danish and enjoy yoghurt and fruit in the morning and buy their butter from a Lidl-esque supermarket called Kvickly.

It's a bit of dressing up, can we all chill?
