Why can't I give away furniture in Zurich??

I have 2 bedframes (high beds, space savers that you can put a desk or couch or another bed underneath) and a wall unit (H200xW250xD39) that I want to give away - in good condition and absolutely free. I'm moving and these pieces aren't needed/won't fit. I have tried ads at Migros and Coop, with photos. I have tried Freecycle.ch Are people learly of the word 'free'? Should I put a low price on the items, just so we can haggle?

Haggling might be the way to go.. Alternatively, try some student site or the local Brockenhaus, they might come and pick it up...

Stick them on Ricardo.ch. I'm surprised at the stuff we've been able to shift on that site.

One item we put in at CHF 18 thinking no-one would want it and, at the close of bidding, we managed to bank over CHF 100. Gobsmacked!

Re: Why can't I give away furniture in Zurich??

Haven't you heard? The Swiss are afraid of anything used!!*

Which means we cheapskate foreigners can pick up slightly used things for a song.

Which means ignore the Swiss and target foreigners, who aren't as fussy about these things.

That said, beds are an interesting case, since bedbugs are on the rebound worldwide, and those f••kers can survive for a YEAR in furniture (even the gaps in wood frames) between feedings. That makes a used bed (frame, mattress, linens, etc.) a high-risk thing to take. The same applies, to a lesser degree, to sofas.

*Exception: cars.

www.ricardo.ch and the many Brockenhäuser are proof that the Swiss appreciate buying used articles.

Thanks for that comforting news! For everyone else's information, there are no bed bugs, now or ever, in this furniture!

I don't think tooki was implying that your own beds have bedbugs, but simply pointing out that, due to their increasing annoying presence, many people are wary of buying second-hand beds these days ... maybe you would like to remove your groan

Sorry, I'm a newbie. Didn't read the 'groan' information. Do people get thrown out for too many? (these faces are fun though)

Honestly? Everyone I know who uses those regularly is either foreign, or Swiss who has lived abroad enough to have learned that used stuff isn't radioactive.

Quite right. The New York City public health officials, for example, have been telling people to not take used bedding and sofas (e.g. the stuff left on the curb that gutter punks and other freecyclers would otherwise have reused). The risk of contaminating a building with bedbugs is too high, and if they get in, they're extremely hard to eradicate. (In some areas, they're showing resistance to all the common insecticides! )

If you put photos with your ad here, you might find some takers.

Yes, but they want everything for next to nothing. Now I think the better items end up on Ricardo and the Brockenhäuser get the things that no one wants or the seller did not have time or means to put it on Ricardo.

I have also sold items on Piazza and Gratisinserate, there are no commissions, but Ricardo still gets more hits.

Just a last note: as a last resort, I would put an add at the Uni and ETH; students are often quite eager to get free stuff... of course, that will work better once they are back in town after summer, but one can always try!

Re: Why can't I give away furniture in Zurich??

Did you try listing it on this site? I will try that once I make 10 posts

I have a really heavy dresser and bed frame that is big and heavy and I would have to hire a truck to take in to the Brokenhuus or however you spell it. So going to try on here first.

Call the Brockenhaus — they'll pick it up.
