PS, Also, the oil has to be fresh. If the place uses it's oil for too long then you get a nasty mess!

Mmmm. The best chips are the thickness of a finger (not the 6.5mm wide things called French fries) and (as Nicky rightly pointed out) fried in Lard or Dripping. Yesssss

Re: Fish 'n' Chips [lack of]

so there's a lot of Kebab shops in Zurich then? Do they serve Doner Kebabs with blue cheese sauce too?

Used to be my favourite after one too many pints - but then all dodgy food tastes good when you're sozzled anyway

Mark, obviously the stuff about fish stocks is well founded but on the fresh v frozen you're way out.
Quite correct Bob. In Yorkshire it tends to come from the docks that morning. A nugget from schooldays - apparently there's no place in the UK further away than 75 miles from the sea.

Whitby crab - oh. It's impossible to visit Whitby without everyone you know asking you to bring a fresh one back.

Plus, proper Yorkshire fish'n' chips are/were deep fried in beef dripping. None of the poncy vegetable oil you get in London.

Ooer, feeling slightly homesick at the mo'...

Bif George's fish bar in Portswood, Southampton - now that was a pla(i)ce.
The small chips was a real struggle to finish (and I'm a champion salad dodger - ask Polorise), but I once saw a kid ask for the 'family' size portion. It filled a carrier bag and nearly bent the poor kid's spine. That one shop on its own could probably cause a potato famine somewhere if it had a good week.
To topit off, they were the best chips I've had from a chippy.
I remember Big George's! I often had Saturday lunch from there!

About the fresh fish, I remember a fish monger I knew driving his own fish van from Grimsby to Yorkshire with the fresh fish packed in ice for the chippies.

Grimsby fish and Yorkshire chips made from Lincolnshire potatoes! I was discussing fish'n'chips in Zug Pickwicks last night, saying that a proper English pub, with Proper fish'n'chips near by, served up in last weeks copy of 'The Sun' is something I really lust after.

Dear God - I always joke to people from the UK that the nearest one is in Munich and now it looks like it's true.
Just as well I had five pieces out of a bargain bucket tonight before coming back tomorrow!

Re: Fish 'n' Chips [lack of]

A fish'n'chips will open february 6 in Basel, next to the Steinegrill. It'll also serve English Breakfast.

For those in Zürich, how about the Nordsee Restaurant? Seems to be within Zürich HB main building (so you'll probably pay through your nose).

I've bought there 5 times over the past few years (always hoping for something better), but have had no choice but to throw it away (I can't afford this, and would never / have never done it other than necessary).

I bet it doesn't.

Though as you didn't mention which year Feb 6 2032 sounds plausible.

Is that tramways re-opening? (Well, re-establishing as a fish and chip place)

No, IIRC it's by the Steinegrill next door. The owner says he has a nephew in the UK who has a few Fish'n'chips restaurants so he may get proper ingredients.

Article in german.

Not really sure why my post on wishing there would be a really good British fish 'n chip shop near us in Zürich was deleted as spam last night, so here we go again

Re: Fish 'n' Chips [lack of]

I don't understand why it is such a challenging thing to make good fish n chips. After deep frying thousands of orders of cod, perch, well anything I just don't see how you can mess it up. Other then being cheap and not taking pride in your work.

Is there that much of a demand though in Switzerland? I mean if there was the set up is so incredibly basic I might even consider giving it a go. Or as a one off for the amusement of it.

For some reason you've decided to post a year-old article about Tramways for shits and giggles.

It isn't, once you have the right equipment, but if the people cooking it fry all the fish and chips at 6pm then sell them warmed under hot lights for the next few hours it'll be ruined.

After Tramways failed, I did wonder. The place needs to market itself to locals (which admittedly in Basel Stadt's case is probably mainly foreign anyway) not just Brits. I've had Canadian friends try it and not want to go again as the chips weren't thin and crispy. Losers.

You can't get fresh cod or haddock here for a start - straight off the boat and into the fryer the same day.

You were talking about good fish and chips, weren't you?

It's probably referring to the one that opened and is already closed.

It's because you replied to ( and probably quoted) a spam message. The one about selling a fryer to someone who is shipping it to Switzerland I suppose.
