Re: Flies!!!

For the last few days we've also had quite a few spiders appearing on our walls... Brrrrr, hate the buggers....

And yes, the big ones can survive to the Hoover, and sometimes they even get out again through the pipe.... Brrrr....

Re: Flies!!!

I bought one of the battery powered tennis raquet swatter things from Obi (4€ inc. batteries in Germany). It's fun. Some people complain about the burning fly smell, but mine just seem to "stick" there. I shake the racket over the balcony to clean it.

No big house flies though, just the smaller fruit flies so far. I tend to "chase" the big ones out of the window.

charliecorse has no particular reputation at present
here's a good trick for getting rid of fruit flies, put vinegar and a couple of drops of washing up liquid in a bowl then leave somewhere out of sight. most of the flies will be found drowned in the liquid within 24hours.

Re: Flies!!!

I have just bought a "bug bat" back from the UK. It's wicked. It uses a high pitched tone to subdue the victim, then "ZAP" it electrifies the little critters. Its a bit disconcerting as they fry and you see a little spark but it works! It is also fun in a sick way, and you get to practice your tennis swing in the process.

Re: Flies!!!

We had a bbq here recently and it was so embarrassing as we've never ever had so many flies in the house! We live near farms, and the weather was changing- but we had another problem. One of the guests, who shall be totally nameless, lol, had brought some prawns which were out-of-date and it was decided it was best not to eat them. I made the mistake of putting them in the bin in the utility - ooop, it really didn't help. Later on we had a big storm and emptied the bin- and they are all gone again. Hurray.

BTW we have bug screens on all our windows, and one on the kitchen door- but of course that one is no good when you have visitors coming in and out all the time.

Sitting in the livingroom being annoyed by millions of house flies!!! (ok, rather 5 to 10 at a time)
Since weeks!!!
Where do they come from, what can I do to get rid of them???
cleaning the whole time, tried an insect spray, helpes for about two seconds... VERY frustrating...
do flies have nests??? and if yes, how can I find them???
Grateful for any idea...
Yup, no ceiling fans , no door screens , small and congested apartments with outrageous rent , no washer/dryers , laundry in basement and can be done once a week and the list goes on ...

Its like living in a hostel again

Re: Flies!!!

Can I ask about wasps, does anyone have any good tips to keep them away when you're eating outside?

Lunch time with my kids today was a joke: kids ate while I shooed all the wasps away and I never got round to sitting down to eat

Re: Flies!!!

Thanks Odile, my lips are sealed...

I have discovered a good trick for keeping fruit. The fruit sold here is slightly unripe and I like to keep it for 5 to 7 days to ripen. Unfortunately on about the 5th day the fruit flies attack the soft fruits and they rapidly deteriorate and go bad.

Now the trick is to buy one of those white nylon net laundry bags you use to wash your brassieres in the washing machine. I put my fruit in this and the little fruit flies can't get to the fruit while it ripens. I found that keeping fruit in plastic bags didn't work, but the net bags allow air to surround the fruits.
