I have very few in my place ( a lot more in Australia ) and use a battery powered fly swatter with a safety latch. Works for me ofr over 3 years here. http://en.buchmann.ch/products/Moskito-Killer.htm | The following 4 users would like to thank jrspet for this useful post: | |

Look nearby for a corpse . That'll attract them .(Actutally, we found a dead rat at a property in the UK and that had attracted loads of flies before we found it)
Are you near a field?

They are really annoying, get loads near our place, (cattle shed fairly close by). Strangly some houses/bars are more affected than others.
Tried putting old 5 rappen coins on the window ledge after a tip off from Grossi............didn't work. |

I used to live in the mountains near lots of pasture; the flies were unbelievable. A friend of mine got one of these:
Really quiet, the flies are attracted to the light and the fan sucks them back into a box. Extremely effective! My friend explained that flies are so hard to slap because they sense the air pressure from your hand and fly away from it- here they sense the vacuum of the fan and interpret it as pressure from the other direction and in they go. Not sure if that's scientifically correct buy he had to dump the box of flies daily as it would just be plumb full. I moved to civilization before I broke down and got one for myself.

In my place, the flies seem to be attracted to electronic equipment which are turned on such as computer screens and laptops. Some are active when late at night and early in the morning.

My mother-in-law has string curtains up in some of the rooms, I keep toying with the idea of getting some myself as she rarely seems to have trouble with flies and I'm thinking to experiment with whether these type of curtains will help minimize the number of flies getting into our place. (Maybe they seem more solid to the flies than they do to us?) |

We've had fly screen fitted on each room. We also have a big one for the kitchen/garden door - but as we come and go + dog and cat non-stop we don't use that one - and that's where the blighters come in! We have one of those UV light zappers- but it's useless! C'est la vie. Think how happy the birds are with all that food around.

I'd like to know why flyscreens (like we have in Australia and I couldn't live without) are not used in Europe and the UK, where I am just now. There are flies and other bugs all the time in summer. And even now in Scotland, which you couldn't possibly call summer yet.

I had a similar situation, the flies were just stuck to the windows. In addition, when cleaning I was finding some small black balls which I was cleaning up without noticing they were flies eggs.
To cut a long story short, I called a company to come to fumigate and to find out what was the issue. The thing was, my cats litter was atracting flies from a closed farm, during the warm days the flies were leaving their eggs in (ie. wet cat food) the food ended up in the bin and from there the larves were leaving and moving to dark places (in the bin, below furniture, coach, etc) and after a couple of days the flies were born. I was in shock when I heard that, and they told me all this process can happen very quickly, so watch out for the wet food around or wet areas where the flies can leave their eggs.

I bough my screens in Migros. It is easy to install and you can do it yourself in no time.
You cut the size you need for the window and scotch the velcro on the window frame. You can take off the screen when ever you want. I usually took them off to clean them. It also catch the pollen from outside and help to reduce the amount coming inside.
We didn't have any flies nor mosquitos with those screens.
Priceless!

Ours were fairly expensive and professionally fitted. They go up and down like blinds- which is great. As we are here long-term, it was well worth it.

WOW so many great ideas, thank you!
I checked for a corpse.. didn't find one...
yes there are a lot of cows and fields nearby...
fly screen for the veranda door could be difficoult to install... but will check
I like the fly raket, looks like a lot of fun!
I love the fansuckinthingy, will see where I can get one of them...
I think the 5Rappen trick has got something to do with copper but it should be wet or something... can't remember exactly...
I think I'm off to landi soon... seems to be the right place for fly destruction items

Our window screens go up and down, but the door one goes from left to right. As said, rarely used as I'm in and out of garden like a yoyo- and so it cat and dog.

Are they definitely house flies?
We have an infestation on kitchen moths at the moment, which at first I thought were flies. It's truly horrible and I thank the EF for a wealth of advice on how to deal with them.
