Wimbledon 2011 - title's in the bag already...

Oh boy. I'm not a specific Murray fan, although I like to see him do well.

However, he ain't done himself no favours... the hype around him this year is going to be .

Made worse when he exits after the second round...

I'll happily be proven wrong come the final bell/whistle/whatever, but the British press are going to be building him up throughout the tournament. Personally, I think he has a mind block against the top players in pressure 'Slam situations - basically he loses his cool/focus/mojo.

Anyway, back on topic, this is a complaint in advance for all the crap we're going to have to put up with over the coming month, about how he's a shoe-in...

I think he has a decent chance of making the later stages (quarters / semis) as long as

1) He can stay fit (seems to get injured in the 2nd round of every tournament and then "play through the pain")
2) He can stop whining (when things don't quite go his way, he moans and complains and has a total victim mentality - not a very appealing attitude)

I guess Federer has to be the favourite, Nadal and Djokovic will obviously be a danger too, but lets be fair Murray is a good player and regardless of what he may spout in the media he is one of the favourites on merit (unlike Henman, Rusedski etc who were never good enough to win but still got hyped year in year out...)

Although I agree with what you write, my issue remains with the British press.

Last I checked, he's still #4 in the world. That means that there are at least 3 (very) good players ahead of him in the pecking order... something the British press like to gloss over...

I think you wanted to say "at least 3 (very) good players ahead of him"...

It seems to me like British tabloids have very bad effect on him, due to unnecessary hype created around him.

3 very good players in front of him

he is a whiny little girl who loves to point out he is scottish, british press should have nothing to do with him, and all proper brits should get "anyone but murray" t-shirts made and worn round the court.

changing his coaching staff every 5 minutes isn't really helping him either.

He is hardly the first sportsman or sportswoman who thinks that the world revolves around them.

As for thinking he can win Wimbledon, if he doesn't believe in himself who will?

I used to feel that same about him as a lot of the posters, but a while ago when he lost against Federer he commented "I can cry like Roger, it's a shame I can't play like him.".

I started to feel some sympathy for him. I hope he wins a grand slam in the near future.

Every year its the same thing.. the further Murray gets in the tournament. the more feverish the media coverage gets.. especially in London. And every year he crashes out.

I dont think he will win.. and sadly I dont think he will ever win wimbledon the current crop are too far ahead of him than him.. and the next generation are on their way. The same can be said for roddick, to a lesser extent the aussie hype about hewitt.

I do like Li Na to take out her second grand slam

The British media always do this for sports, England are always going to win the World Cup (football or rugby, take your pick), the Ashes are a sure bet and Radcliffe is going to win every marathon. It is no wonder that the sports men & women get caught up in all the hype.

The guy just doesn't have what it takes to be a real champion - Henman was the same.

Actually, I think it is unfair to say he's the same as Henman - Murray is without a doubt (in my mind) a far better player. Unlike Henman, I think he has the technical game to beat the best - indeed he's beaten the top 3 regularly, but never "when it matters", as it were.

I think his problem is application when the chips are down. If he can turn it around great, but the downside is that the "media" will then expect him to win everything...

Exactly this.

I think the win at Queens demonstrated that Murray is a good tennis player - he didn't get to be number 4 in the world by accident.

It just seems to me that when the pressure is on, a "great" player will channel the pressure and use it positively. In my opinion, Murray seems to take a very negative outlook in the big matches - there is always something to blame, be it an injury, bad coaching, weather, the umpires, whatever - anything except Mr Andrew Murray.

A truly great sportsman should be able to accept the mistakes he made and work on them to improve, rather than blaming anyone but themselves for their own shortcomings. I don't think Murray will be mentally strong enough to win a Grand Slam unless he has a fairly radical shift in his attitude.

But in fairness we did win the Ashes back-to-back. I guess they (the media) were bound to get it right some time

And we have reached 3 RWC finals (one totally unexpectedly), winning one of them.
