Re: smoking on Zurichsee ferries

I think relaxing will help all-round. The more neurotic you are about it, the more it will affect you and your family.

Oh and I'm a non-smoker and don't enjoy a lung-full of second-hand smoke but deal with my issues internally

Sorry but this is incorrect.

I had to close my windows quite often when we lived in CH, and in almost every case it was when someone's smoke would enter from the outside. If I failed to do so I would be subject to massive headaches the following morning.

I'd be quite unwilling to bet someone that their children's chest infections are not due to second hand smoke. The medical evidence suggests that this isn't a good bet. For those who are prone to allergies second hand smoke is the largest cause of respiratory problems. It is also clearly linked with the increased probability of childhood asthma.

The best thing the OP can do is to close windows when they smell smoke and try and keep them open at other times. Also it is interesting to note that concrete buildings with limited ventilation (close windows being a good example) are very bad, in and of themselves for people who suffer from respiratory complaints. You get to choose, either live with the smoke and suffer the problems that this causes or seal yourself up and suffer from sick building syndrome.

We have tried it with the bedroom windows but it gets soo stuffy. The worst thing is waking up and tasting cigarette smoke first thing inthe morning. The guy on the adjacent balcony has his first ciggy about 4 am, I usually get out of bed, give him a filthy look while shutting the bedroom window firmly.

Im quite a relaxed person but do not like smokers, people rant about all sorts of things that probably are important to them but viewed as neurotic as others. I thought this was the complaints corner and people can complain about what they want, calling me neurotic is pretty offensive actually.

So now we have the root cause of the problem. Took some time though.

Lol ok I confess I do not like smokers, or should I say the habit of smoking and how some smokers conduct themselves.

I have smokers in my family which makes it pretty hard because I love them, but they do not smoke around me or my kids, I have an Uncle who last year had the most awful surgery to remove his throat cancer,he is cancer free now but went through alot of suffering to get there. I really hope that my children have been educated enough never to do it but its their lives and only they can make that choice.

When we have our little aperitif evenings outside here, one of my neighbours actually sits beside me because she likes the smell of cigarette smoke!!

Re: smoking on Zurichsee ferries

I do agree that smoking in clean air can be very annoying. On a boat there is not much place to go and moving your family is a lot of work. I do agree that there should be a separate smoking deck at the very end of the ship.

As for balcony smokers: isn't it incredible that smokers who do not want their smoke in their own home go outside, close their own windows and start smoking your house. Our nabours are not even that close but I smell instantly when they are outside smoking: my bedroom smells like smoke. I don;t like that at all.

I know that smoking is not easy to quit but seriously it is nasty for the non-smokers, also outside. To the smokers: if you plan to stop: wait about a year after quitting and then see what you think of other people's smoke. Only then you will smell how bad it actually is!

By the way I think it is also psychological (with me), cause someone's smoke suddenly annoyes me much less when that person actually makes an effort . Asking before lighting up, etc...

I can take it as much as dish it out but you seem to be the one making it personal.

Really boring actually. I came on here for an interesting discussion about a subject I feel quite strongly about, people have been quite personal to me about it when I have not singled one person out for a personal attack.

Im not going to comment on this thread again, interesting to see other posters actually feel the same way I do, lets see who jumps on their comments eh?

OK, I'm a smoker, I try not to smoke next to children, pregnant women, the usual set.

The OP is annoyed about the attitude of some people who smoke.

I get really annoyed when there are people who've had way to much to drink but I don't call all drinkers selfish - and before anyone harps on about the difference, when did you know of any one attacking anyone or wife bashing after smoking 20 camels?

Some people are not as socially aware as other people. Some people are just annoying smoker bashers. Back in the UK, obese people get special hospital beds, specialist ambulances cos they are too fat, whole operating theatres have to be moved to the ground floor to support the extra weight.

Don't have a go at people who have got addicted to something which is sold legally by governments and have huge taxes applied.

There are plenty more people who are far more selfish and annoying than the odd smoker on a ferry. I assume the OP wouldn't mind if someone who had drunk far too much had a tinkle over the side right next to his family

Or a drunk who hurled abuse at the family?

As a smoker I've found it like going back about 10 years in terms of the smokers awareness to other people around them - it's the way they are. If society wants to change it will, lets just hope that the Swiss learn from the mistakes of other European countries and don't ban smoking on the terrace, or other such nonsense.

Re: smoking on Zurichsee ferries

Hi,

Maybe I generalised too much,it is only some smokers that I am complaining about, not all, selfish was also too strong a word, does inconsiderate work better?

I do not know how I would react to someone taking a tinkle next to my family tbh lol. I guess less offensive than someone throwing up next to my family.

Well, the media has worked hard elsewhere to demonize smokers and there are a lot of smokers who make it easy to be demonized. Back in the states, my neighbour, over 200 yards away, would bitch about my smoking out on my back deck and cough pointedly as if that would be a message to me that I might be bothering him. That man wouldn't make it 5 minutes in Zurich. The thing is, that no matter how hard you try to be a considerate smoker, it's always going to bother someone unless you're on top of the matterhorn, alone.

As both an American and a closet smoker, CH is pretty much of a shock in terms of what inconsiderate, need I say young as well since it seems smoking among the youth is pretty popular unfortunately, smokers consider acceptable smoking areas. I am frequently annoyed by people smoking in places that I would never dream of, especially since I'm so terribly neurotic about it myself. So...I gather that the OP is from the US and I can totally understand the disdain, especially since smoking wouldn't be allowed on a public ferry in the US most likely (I know it's not allowed on Boston Ferries anyway), and even in other parts of the EU like Scandinavia, smoking is incredibly limited. CH is like stepping back 50 years in terms of smoking tolerance.

Taxed or not, we're a dying breed in the sites of the general public. Fatties, well, they're next though it's so epidemic at this point it may not get the popular vote like smoking has.
