To satisfy my own curiosity, what recyclables are they picking up for you that often?
I ask because the only ones that get picked up directly from outside the building are paper & cardboard. Everything else must get trundled down to the nearest recycle bins where you separate brown, green and white glass from each other and have a few additional for metals.
We now, within the last year (plus a lil more) have one that's actually on the way to a decent grocery within walking distance... I do still often forget to bring it with me though (and hubby refuses to bring with him on his way to work) so... | | | | | I do bring the bottles to the nearest bins, but my wife and I try to recycle as much as possible. We are not anal about it, but we do feel it's the right thing to do. I just don't like holding on to the stuff forever. That's all.

Just shove your recyclables in the normal rubbish bag. That's what I do. | | | | | What? And pay extra! / What? And not do my green duty! ( Delete whichever is not appropriate ). | Quote: | | | | ...(We don't want these buggers finding out I'm a lush, eh?) | | | | | FTFY

Varies by gemeinde. We have lots of recycle points for tins, bottles, oil, batteries etc - 2 with a 100m of home - but big stuff only gets picked up twice a year, paper every 2 months, metal once a year.

Mind you, in the UK our rubbish bin was emptied only once every TWO weeks, with the green bin (garden rubbish and vegetable waste + cardboard) every other week too. Spend a few days working on a landfill site if you don't think recycling is worthwhile.

I take my empty bottles to the bins near my local Coop - then potter into the Coop to buy more..
Paper is every Wednesday morning, and the rest gets collected 3 times a week.

I bought 3 plastic boxes with a lid from Ikea, they stack up easliy, one for Pet Bottels, glass, and cardboard. Once they are full, you can easily transport the boxes to the recycling center......

It definitely shocks and confuses me as well.
So strict in garbage disposal---small opening, fines etc.
Yet they make you do all the effort for recycling--very counter-intuitive for sure.
I was used to putting out the garbage and recycling the same day in pre-sorted containers for years.
Then our city introduced a self sorted where we just had to split eveything in 1 of two possibilities. That great plant was shut down due to being too smelly and expensive, so they added a third option which only gets picked up every two weeks.
Very complicated, but I guess no one has it down perfectly yet. Much better than the lame 'recycling' stations and times here though.

I suppose I should just be grateful that they do collect the trash twice a week. When we moved in, the real estate agent informed us it was once a week, Tuesday mornings. We looked at each other and thought, "right, no fish on a Wednesday ever again." | | | | | You're both now mutually telepathic?! Does anyone know of any recycling points where I can drop off paper and cardboard?
I am terrible at keeping track of the collection schedule and not sure about the local rules about bundling cardboard...
Cheers all..

You guys are so blessed with your schedules...I got paper and cardboard collection every 2 months, it happened twice this year already, that I wasn't even close to Switzerland on that day.
However, that's not bad at all. I have a colleague who's paper collection occurs every 3 months...I can just imagine that it turns into a village fest whenever the trucks pull up. | This user would like to thank lost_inbroad for this useful post: | |

No idea about Zurich, sorry. For anybody with compost heaps, cardboard is a great addition in between layer of grass. Any cardboard here is left to soak when it rains, then is torn up and added to compost. Works a treat.

Cheers all.. | | | | | I have figured out you cannot drop off paper anywhere. You drop off just about anything else at Hauptsammelstelle on Drachslerstrasse 15 in Zollikon. Cardboard does not have to be bundled and the lady there prefers you don't. Note: styrofoam can only be white and you pay 1/2 frank for each kilo. They grind it up to make the popcorn stuff. Kinda cool.
Open Tues and Thurs at 13:30 and Sat 9-12. See you there.
