We had a discussion about locking things last night; he thinks that it's paranoia, but he'll close the windows just for me (after a lot of persuasion).

Burglaries are on the rise, not only in Geneva, there was a special report on one of the Swiss Channels, the robbers drill a small hole into the handle, and viola! Apparently they are pretty quiet too, but who goes checking when your neighbor is drilling in the middle of the afternoon?
We live on the ground floor, and installed handles with a lock in it, they were pretty inexpensive too, i think about 6 francs each. Worth the investment, especially for Balcony windows and doors.

I sent the papers to Mr Dishy et al. And last week got me Swisscom TV.
Isn't it nice to watch Saturday Kitchen from the comfort of your couch, instead of that horrible Zatoo thingy!!! Well, me, was sitting on a rather hard chair.
Have a good weekend...

May I add or re talk about.
I have lived here in this flat for almost 6 years. I know my neighbours from my building and from other buildings around. I find them my friends.
Recently, in an apartment on the third floor (ask Bertrand for links) they have opened a "Massage Parlour", so the locataires got a bit angry.
We put up signs etc. "No Prostitution in our Building" The "pimp" broke our main front door, so the code did not work anymore about 8 weeks ago.
I think the the people who came into my flat, rang the door bell - realised i was not home and knew that I had a cat ladder into the kitchen.
I have washed all the clothes which they may have touched. I may not be good at keeping my home clean but if someone touches my clothes...... yuck. The machine has been on at least twice a day.
Tomorrow - big ironing day!
In front of my new Swisscom TV - Come dine with me etc.

It was not like this only 20 years ago. Our house in Ticino was never locked, even during long holidays in Italy. Then we opened our country to the worst immigration, and here we are... It is sad to say that 90% of crimes are made by foreigners outside EU and North America or by Swiss with fresh printed passport...

Multi-lock doors with lockable handles are really good - you should always keep them locked with a key and remove the key from the door. Security glass doesn't seem to as popular as it should be. I hear of new luxury terraced flats, all with ground floor terraces not having it installed. We've thankfully never been broken into but I wouldn't leave a window open and go to the basement or I would have the neighbour's cat stuck inside.

I'm curious as to how you calculated the 90%. My concern is that if you're not able to work out what an online forum is for before you register you may not be writing the best dissertation.

Sorry to hear about the burglery. I had gone thru the same situation in Dec 2008. My wife had terrible time sleeping a couple of weeks thinking that someone has gone thru all our cupboards and private things.. More than the loss of money or worthful things, the feeling of being robbed in your own home takes a while to fade away...

If you read the newspapers you will see that almost all crimes are made by two or three nationalities... ask some policemen friend or look only at the statistics of inmates in swiss jails suerte

But we don't have to hide the reality. Most all of crimes are made by 2-3 nationalities... always the same, and most of crimes where unknown here where people where checked at the borders

Furthermore, search for inmates in swiss jails, the strong majority are not swiss nor foreigners living in Swizerland but as I said crime tourists. thats your mistake right there, news about swiss ne'er-do-wells doesn't sell papers / increase circulations.
The one man crime spree in our village was by .....
.... A Swiss boy! actually the son of the village mayor, go figure. (who is an SVP councilor)

Instead of bickering, can anyone provide any useful statistics to prove / disprove Simon's anecdotal evidence?
I suspect there may be an element of truth to it, but unlikely to be quite the 99% levels claimed!

I'm sure I read it was 80% but how do you define foreigners?? non swiss passport holders? 1st generation, 2nd generation etc etc
the scum bag in our village got off scott free, the school expelled him but the village voted to send him to and pay for private school!! wtf!!! I don't imagine if it had been one of the many turkish children in the village they would have been quite so generous.

What the heck is going on in Geneva? I've been living here for almost three years and crime seems to be getting worse. I don't get it - Geneva seems too small to have such a crime problem.
In the last year, the majority of my friends have had their apartments robbed/attempted break-ins, or they've been pickpocketed/purse snatched when out and about.
The craziest thing I have seen thus far was when I was walking my dog in Champel a couple of months ago during the afternoon and I saw an 80 year old women mugged - unfortunately by the time I ran up to intervene the mugger had taken off in the opposite direction. She was a little ruffed-up, as he knocked her over and took her purse, but she didn't want me to call the police. WTF?
