Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Hmm, no surprise that an ef post has turned into a debate/argument... haha. I was sorry to hear about all the misfortune Patsy. I was just wondering which level you live on? I always think I am pretty safe being on three, but now I feel very paranoid!

I live on the ground floor, but am above the laundry room, so am about three meters above ground.

We call it rez-sup, here.

Sorry- wrong on both counts. Certainly in Western European countries.

Burglaries are committed to feed drug habits.
Well, the only drugs they would have got in my flat was a couple of old sachets of aspirin. Oops, better put them on my list of things missing.

And with the swissies to stirling the 25 quid they took wouldn't even buy them a coffee or two around the train station.

Oh dear, better check if the jar of cat nip is missing.

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Drug habits? I don't think so. These guys want money, drugs are last season. Have you ever seen a druggie try and get through a window...me neither. But I can imagine. Slow.

These guys get in and out as quick as they can. And run off.

I'm just lucky i wasn't sitting there. But I would have SCREAMED, if i had been.

Basta now, it was done and now I close my windows.

Which makes me sad.

Well, you seem to be speaking of 'crime tourists' now, but earlier you wrote this:

So could you tell us who is committing these crimes? Is it the immigrants? Is it foreigners outside EU and North America? Is it Swiss with fresh printed passports? Or is it crime tourists?

Please do make up your mind.
Look I posted the statistics, if you can read it is clear who is committing the majority of crimes in this country. People who are not from EU, USA, CAN or Japan. For those saying that pre trial doesn't mean guilty, it is true but a judge must confirm the pre trial sentece, so the sentence is perfectly legal.

There are also information which are not public, like crimes committed by young people fresh naturalized and more. In this cases you must be an insider or follow the judiciary reports, in the newspapers or in the official gazette. Or ask some friend in the police or some politician.

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

I am very sorry to hear of your burglary. I have confronted an intruder, but luckily never been burgled. My sisters and brothers have they found it very unnerving- their sanctuary invaded. I hope that you can get back on an even keel soon and one day be able to open the windows again. I think that you can get special locks that will allow the windows to stay open but not open far enough to let someone in.

Before moving here I read that the Swiss do enjoy the right they have to own guns and that there was even more guns than Swiss folk here.

If this is true, do they have the right to blow the head off a burglar? Just interested. Or, even, if, say, you find a burglar in your house and maybe hit them with a cleaver. Would you be jailed as in a lot of cases in the UK or get away with it on grounds of self protection (like America?)
...yes blowing someones head of for stealing your VCR seems fair

Yes and I am also sure that 99% of this forum members are expats or people willing to work and live in Switzerland like honest workers.
But we don't have to hide the reality. Most all of crimes are made by 2-3 nationalities... always the same, and most of crimes where unknown here where people where checked at the borders
I am sure that 99% of the foreigners in Switzerland which are not from US, CAN, Europe or japan are also willing to work as honest workers...

please stop with this awful generalizing...

Sorry if I didn't make it blindingly obvious. They're not after drugs in your house (unless they're trying to get high on herbal tea).

They're after money and fairly liquid assets such as jewellery and phones etc which they can easily sell on to get money to feed their drug habit.

Obviously not all burglaries are committed for this purpose and there are organised gangs operating here as well but a high percentage (especially in cities) are for the purpose of feeding a drug addiction.

It is said though to have to keep windows closed and doors locked.

Hope you recover soon.

The one point where he's right of course: (from your own source)
Quote:
From this study it became clear that crime rate is highly correlated on the country of of origin of the various migrant groups. Thus, immigrants from Germany, France and Austria had a significantly lower crime rate than Swiss citizens (60% to 80%), while immigrants from Angola, Nigeria and Algeria had a crime rate of above 600% of that of Swiss population. In between these extremes were immigrants from Former Yugoslavia, with crime rates of between 210% and 300% of the Swiss value.[8]
(emphasis mine)

That is a very significant contributor the the fact that many Swiss are increasingly sceptical of the Schengen agreement for all the benefits it brings. These facts have been downplayed by politicians for decades even though they were well-known, and is also the reason many Swiss differentiate between the "good" and the "bad" foreigners depending on your country of origin. After all, you're either much less, or much more likely to commit a crime.

They don't actually break in to steal your drugs (though if you had anything like X, coke, marijuana, heroin, speed, meth, or Neosporin they would probably take it).

They steal your goodies, take your money, sell what they can, and then go buy their X, coke, marijuana, heroin, speed, meth, and Neosporin.

Except if like me you have a cupboard full of hydrocodone, muscle relaxants etc. all prescribed for the family, but non of us like to take them. The doctor says keep them- you never know. I don't want to pollute the system further by flushing them, so I have to hide them. So many people are hooked on that stuff.

About having a weapon. I got a carving knife out on an intruder in self-defense, but looking back that was such a stupid thing to do, he had raped, beaten and robbed others in the neighborhood. I showed him the knife and told him he had 20 secs to get out before I called the police. What a weird way to react, why the arbitrary 20 seconds? I was very angry. Next time I must remember to run and scream.

Most pharmacies operate a returns policy for the safe disposal of unused medication. Why not drop them off there?
