I got burgled on Saturday

Only just writing about it today, because I have only just found a few new things that are missing.

Maybe my fault, but I left my windows open and went for a nice walk with my neighbours and their dogs down by the lake.

I live on the Rez/Sup - which is the ground floor but up high, above the laundry room.

Came home, noticed two wicker baskets (from Africa with lids) lying on the floor, other things lying on the couch. The baskets had change in them (around 60 or 80 francs), a wooden cigar box was upended - 35 pounds taken. Two old mobile phones - worth nought (one is broken).

Today, I realised they had taken my camera. Pissed off about that because it has piccies of my family etc. on it. Also a few cheapy. chunky necklaces and bracelets which I bought in Thailand.

They must have come up the cat ladder, no other way. I think they rang the doorbell, saw there was no one there and took their chances.

The security code on our main front door has been broken for 8 weeks now, anyone can walk in. Nothing has been done by the Regie. I shall send a letter to them and also to my landlady.

In a way, I am lucky. I took my mobile with me and my bank card. My passport is still here.

Just a warning, folks, be careful with leaving windows open. Even if you think you live in a secure area with lots of neighbours who look out for each other - most of mine are on holiday.

Sorry to write about this, after the sad news over the weekend. But just wanted to warn people.

Sorry to hear about that Patsycat- Geneva is getting worse by the day for petty crime. The police arent interested so each has to look out for themselves.

Did you notify the police? It might be useful if you have a police report filed away should you need to contact your insurance or for whatever unforeseen reason in the future, even if nothing comes of it for now.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Its always a while after the fact that you discover what really has gone missing and then set about wondering what else you have missed in the process.

Oh Patsy cat I am so sorry about what happeend to you. When I came here they told me about the possibility of putting a cat ladder and I remember looking at them increduously...I mean I am from Peru and there it would be an invitation to rob me...You think these things do not happen here *hugs*

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

i'm sorry this happened to you. may i ask what you mean by "windows open?" in my apartment i can leave them open wide (a person could easily climb in this way) or i can open them so that they angle in towards the house from the bottom. i was under the impression that the latter would not pose a security risk since only the bugs can fly through. your post has me rethinking .

again, i'm very sorry this happened to you. i'd be very sad about the missing pictures as well. plus, your home just feels kind of "dirty" after knowing someone was rifling through your stuff.

good luck getting everything sorted out!

Sorry about the burglary. It is a reminder that even in a 'safe' country such as Switzerland everyone needs to take precautions.

Hope that at least your camera turns up. Pictures are usually irreplaceable

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Oh so sorry to hear this. I would also report it to the police. Sometimes there are groups who burglar into private homes, as such the police knows that there was another incident.

A reminder for everyone else to always close the windows.

After a recent robbery, the police themselves advised me to stop thinking of Switzerland as a safe country.

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Oh man, I'm sorry about that experience. My boyfriend and I have been going back and forth, him saying that I should be less prudent (he calls it "paranoid") about safety and that this is Switzerland - "What could possibly happen here? People leave their front doors and cars unlocked."

Well you know what? Better safe than sorry.

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Thanks everyone.

A rather dishy Police Officer came round, and brought the forms on Saturday. Today, my Home Insurance, Helvetia, e-mailed me their forms. Have just filled them all in, to be copied and sent off tomorrow. Along with the guarantee slip for the camera, hopefully that will work. The money can be forgotten about and the mobiles are either broken or one that dates from the late nineties!!

The jewellery is just another excuse for an exotic holiday!!!

It did feel dirty, to think that someone's grubby little hands had touched my stuff. But they didn't find the vodka hidden in the kitchen cupboard... which I must admit I had a couple of slurps out of!!

Going to the shops now - check windows, check door, check sense of humour!!! All good!!

Mr Dishy did say to take a couple of days to look around. Which is good advise, because you do panic a bit at first.

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Sorry, Patsycat, that's too bad. Hope you won't find anything else missing. Now in warm weather, who knows what kind of people are on the hunt in the city..

Burglaries and pety crime are definitely climbing up, in our area too, both cities of Lausanne and Geneva and in the area in between. People should make sure things are secured before they take off for holidays, have your neighbor take your mail, leave shoes on the doormat, a light switched on (get a special timer), windows shut but shutters open, closed shutters invite.

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

You just don't think about it when you're going for a two hour walk on a Saturday afternoon. Ok it was four, but even so.

Where I live, the blocks of flats look onto a courtyard. There is always people walking up and down, and kids playing. But this last week, alot of people are away on holiday. Plus the fact that the main front door is broken, and as it was a Saturday the offices in front are closed. And during the week there are always people standing having their cigs right in front of me.

It happened here also, a few years ago, there was scaffolding up. Two of my upstairs neighbours were burgled during the lunchbreak of the workers. I was too, but I think I frightened them (I flushed the toilet!!) and they only got away with a phone. Did the whoever is concerned with building work do anything? Did he F!!

Anyone try to climb my cat ladder again (apart from Jimmy) will have me standing waiting with my frying pan!! A friend climbed it once. 5 kilos to 60 ratio. He got the scream from some terrible horror film, and then had to calm ME down. Give me my dues, I was listening to music on U toob full blast ACDC. And he had tried to throw a snowball at my shutter...

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Sorry to hear about that.

One thing to think about: is it worth claiming a small amount from the insurance, considering any consequences? Online, my house insurance company has a calculator to see the excess you pay vs the amount you will receive, compared to the change in premium that will follow...

Re: I got burgled on Saturday

Grynch, he must have been small and lithe. The one that came up mine on Saturday, stood on the top plastic " Cat viewing his kingdom" bit and broke it. Also broke quite a bit more.

Bof, the cat can still get up and down it.

Better get to those shops.
