Also, the machine does not say how many stops constitute the "short trip ticket"
I've had the same problem in Bern, it's not exactly clear what constitues a "Kurzstrecke". As a family we got caught with the wrong tickets, thankfully before we reached the cut-off point, the guy said suggested we get off at the next stop and buy more tickets. The machines have been upgraded since.

I recon it was more that they thought you where a tourist so wanted to make sure it got paid, if you showed them your residency permit things would have been different
Sounds likes a town that doesn't need tourism, then...

got to agree with treverus, the op knew the ticket was wrong, the excuse about the 5chf doesn't really hold water, on top of that I can't remember the last time I saw a machine that didn't take a card for payment, and as the op clearly had an atm card then why didn't they use that? or are the machines different down there??
Apparently only the ticket machines in Lausanne center take cards. As you move away from town, the machines only take coins, and not all of them at that.

Re: Mobilis Cops Mad with Own Power

Just to make this clear, what would the French phraseology be if you actually wanted to be touched? This of course in the unlikely event that some Nathalie Portmann-like inspector tried mixing it up with me in case I accidentally SNAFUed my ticket purchase?

Re: Mobilis Cops Mad with Own Power

You guys would love the bus ticket machines in Fribourg then; they do not give change, nor can you buy a return ticket, but you can use the CASH function or a tpf card, if the slot is working, they are unreliable in the cold and not exactly user-friendly at the best of times.

Re: Mobilis Cops Mad with Own Power

It is indeed confusing when buying short trip ticket on the old bus/metro machines around Lausanne, and most of them are like that. It's not a joke, it is really confusing to count the stations. Some machines need to insert 1-2 numbers associated with the zones from a list to if you intend to travel further, first time seeing it absolutely no way to figure it out how it works.

Very often the coins are not accepted, so if you don't have other you are not able to buy. Credit card DON'T work, they have different system called CASH which is supplementary account to your credit card and needs to be charged in your bank, but my bank said that the system is obsolete and they are not supporting it anymore and that the machines are being changed to accept all credit cards (like the train machines). To buy an additional CASH card only for this will cost you I think 30-40% more than using coins.

I don't think that the OP is to blame, I can confirm these issues and can literally happen to anyone. Since months I am only buying tickets at the railway machines or metro if they are updated.

And a controller has no right to act like that, no matter the reason. AFAIK, the fine for not having a ticket is 70 CHF, if you got a receipt go the appropriate office and demand an explanation, if I were you I would definitely file a complain against the controller. One or two complains for the same guy will definitely make a difference and his manager will take action. For sure he won't be like that in the future.

On a side note, I was traveling out of Geneva last week, at the control I was cleared, passed the metal detector gate with all green, the officer next to it gave me a sign to proceed, as I was taking my stuff from the X-ray, there is a guy few steps away coming to me and grabbing me and starts to yell for me to take out my shoes. Trying to explain I just passed the detector the guy screams even more if you don't take off your shoes you don't go. I was already very late for my flight, took of my shoes (nobody else did) put them in the X-ray, him checking my pockets, his colleagues amazed and silently watching the totally unnecessary yell...and me saying thank you for your kind appreciation and service.

Have a friend who does similar job at Paris Airport.

Don't know why, but these people definitely have issues.

If showing power and ruining your day for them is life ambition...well they have sad life.

When the machine wouldn't take my 5 franc coin (literally the slot was too small for a 5 franc coin!)
I am a bit surprised, for all the time I have been in Lausanne never seen such a machine which doesn't take 5 francs coin.

A couple of times, though, the machine has happily taken my 5 francs for a 2.20 ticket, but hasn't given me any change

Go check out some of the machines at UNIL and EPFL, then.

Some of the machines are very temper-mental with the 5 franc coins. That is why you often see rub marks on the face of the machine (no more paint). Rub the coin (the edges) on the machine then try again. If that does not work, get on the bus without a ticket and tell the driver that the machine did not take the coin. Ask to stop at the next stop to get a ticket. I have done this on several occasions. Also good to have the TL transit card for these situations. Gives another option on the newer machines that are equipped for the cards.

Yes, some of the OLDER machines do not give change. Most of them have been replaced but you might still find the odd one depending on the line. Same as above, it is good to have the TL card as well.
