I guess my use of the word racism isn't correct because 'middle east' isn't really a race.
Most of them are the descendants of Shem, so they are a race, really.

Don't let these newfangled Victorian notions of race put you off, old chap.

Like I've said already, I don't claim that any of my posts aren't complete and utter tosh. In fact I think every single one of my posts are complete crap.

Equally I think this thread isn't worthwhile like grumpygit claims it is worthwhile. It strikes me as a thread ciritising a whole type of person (is middle eastern a race?) for the actions of a few. I don't have the stats but does every middle eastern person who comes to Geneva act like this?

The original post by grumpygit uses phrases like 'this lot' and 'these people'. It also made no mention of the fete in the original post and critised all middle eastern people who come to visit Geneva.

I guess my use of the word racism isn't correct because 'middle east' isn't really a race.
You know what Porsch, your exagerrated reaction to this thread and your generosity with the neg rep tells me you must be having a seriously bad day, so I reckon the best thing is to wish you a better one tomorrow and things get back on track. Cheers

BTW this guys shows how to approach a threat, with consideration appropriate force and clear assertive actions.

He was commended by several newspapers and others for his actions and the chav's reputation for being a "hard man" was ruined.

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

Well, I never thought a thread about middle eastern men misbehaving in Geneva would result in a video being posted of some scumbag being taught a lesson in my lovely (cough) hometown.

Maybe I should circulate this among my Swiss neighbours with a little message : 'people from St Helens do not like their rubbish messed with.' I bet they wouldn't move my stacks of paper and cardboard then

The guy with the black tshirt has a lot of force also and way way too much patience! He seemed so calm and just waited for the right moment to hit the other guy. I liked the way the ''thug'' crawled and the last guy closed the door of the fence.

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

On a more general note, I’ve been wondering why such threads make me cringe. The scenario is always the same: they come and disrupt our status quo, they come to destroy our values, etc. I remember when Englishmen started coming in thousands to my home town – Krakow in Poland – to organize stag parties there. I objected to some people calling them “a drunken horde” or “arrogant Westerners.” I think arrogance transcends borders and there is always racism lurking in such remarks.
I do sympathize with the victims of sexual harassment, such as the OP. I don’t think such behaviour should be condoned, but I don’t believe in collective responsibility and bashing whole cultures.

You are right but I can testify that the fetes de Geneve was a really fun event and as sky said it turned ugly during the late 80s. The littering is also revolting.
It is so bad that if ever I visit Switzerland during that period, I stay away from it.

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

Some of the young people who go to Krakow or Budapest ARE thugs. And yet many who go are perfectly sensible and well-brought up and then ... momentarily turn to evil Condemning all culture groups because of the behaviour of some, even if the some seem to be the majority in a specific location or event- is not fair. I've spent years trying to explain this to other Europeans who suffer the terrible behaviour of British Yuff on hols, football matches and stag dos- eg that most don't normally behave like that, and that those are not typical examples of British youth and people. But the message from the Police and the authorities in Geneva should go beyond money and cash- and should be crystal clear. The Swiss though are not the only people who will close a blind eye to bad behaviour in the name of tourism, sadly- although tourism is very badly hit by the strong Chuff and figures are down and getting worse.

Porsche, I can understand and feel your frustration here. However the comments are indeed aimed at a small group, Saudis, and not Muslims in general. Salam alekum.

Iranians are Middle-Eastern- definitely not Arabs. Israelis are Middle-Eastern some are Arabs some aren't. The Turks are Middle-Eastern ( still) they are not Arabs. The Egyptians include Jews and Christians they are supposed to be Middle-Eastern, but some consider themselves to be African rather than Arab.
There are lots of other races living in the Middle-East- like the Armenians etc. They are not Arabs. Who's Shem-some fictional bible figure?

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

I say we keep condemning them. Do it for the sake of the minority who are behaving. If we condemn them, we are taking the side of their victims, the oppressed women in their nations. Ive never been to the middle east but i have many friends working in the UAE as nurses. They go there despite the high risk of getting raped. Its so common that alot of their patients are rape victims and very rarely do they report their cases because they would be the ones punished for it by their families if not by their laws.

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

I do like to party but I do not know personally know of any Middle-Easterners who have behaved inappropriately in public. I have had a rough time myself during Albany Fascht and the winter carnival . In fact one of my Middle-Eastern Christian friends was tied with plastic as handcuffs and taken away by police dressed as witches. There was a lot of revelry and drugged or drunken behaviour. I got very man-handled/molested- seemed like a bot of a free-for-all.

However, for years the Swiss Government acquisitioned property whiched belonged to the Former Shah of Iran then belonged to the Iranian government. One was Suvretta House in Sankt Moritz. They rented that out (I think to a very wealthy Italian family who really used it to party). I am unsure as to what eventually happened to the property or even who paid for the wear and tear.

Why not just create a Middle-Eastern deal?- that the Middle-Easterners get a long weekend to party as long as they chip in cleaning up the place for the rest of the year.

Oh so I was right- unless of course you believe in the ark and that Shem was a 600 year old when he died. During which time he begat mankind, and beastkind after the flood receded?

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

Sorry y'all, but this thread bugs me.

There's too much stereotyping and generalizations about different cultures.

Take any population/ethnicity (whatever) permanently or temporarily migrating to another land, and the natives (regardless of where) will feel the same.

I wonder if spain's version of the English forum has the same thread about the British coming in the summer?
