Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

Re-open the thread that was closed.

I have never been treated like I was last year. Bruises - pinches -on my legs, upper thighs, arms. Just because I was wearing shorts or a shortish skirt.

They bring the money, but not the good fun feeling of the Fetes de Geneve of 10 years ago or even more.

I am not a racist.

But Jeddah by the Lake is becoming a joke. I don't go down there anymore. I feel abused mentally and as above physically. Even my male friends make a sort of bodyguard thing around me when we walk down the rade just to see the lights. How sad is that? I can't even go for a stroll along my lakeside, without being pinched by a - whatever?

I am not the only woman who has been abused like this, by the richest in the world, who think they can get away with whatever.

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

i dont get it? there wars a fete/ party on the streets, packed with peole and while you were out for an easy walk you got pushed, physically hurt?
and these people causing the hurt are middle eastern?

tbhonest i avoid any of those parties like the plague. what to expect?
foodstalls, beer, joyrides and hordes of idiots, stupid music, no forth no back, just the urgent need to escape. not my cuppa. that was caliente for me...

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

When I had got pinched etc. It was not packed. These men do it all the time. At 11 at 14 at 16 at whenever.

And I am sorry, they were Arabs. It is known in Geneva.

flow - come to the Fetes de Geneve - it lasts for three weeks, lots of music, lots of funfair, lots of fireworks.

Do your homework before you ask me questions. By the way - i live in Geneva so i think i know a wee bit more than you.

The pushing and pinching goes on for about 2 months.

I feel very sorry for you, but most of them did NOT mean it in any negative way ! YES, they just are enthusiastic to stay in places where women are not hidden behind veils

So, your reaction has to be a mix of strict refusal and general tolerance. Mum did so in Zch.-dtwn for many years, and her rather rough ways were not only tolerated but in a way appreciated.

Sorry if I've got this wrong, but are you suggesting women should just tolerate this behaviour because these men have never seen a woman in a skirt?

To be a bit clearer, most of those badly behaving chaps are from Saudi Arabia (and Kuwait). They make the hotels profitable which is nice, BUT no reason for you to accept their ways for a minute.

And again, they accept being refused. Strange but true. Both Mum and my sister-in-law in Zurich did it often. And my s-i-l even got invited to a coffee by one of them. And HE told her (sorry where I come from I have the choice between whores and heavily veiled and guarded girls) and when she replied "HERE right in this place you have neither ! ) he countered "you hardly know how lucky you are". The big fountain in Geneva resembles passages of the Koran, so that you to them possibly are one of the ...... virgins

I don't usually respond to these threads, but this is a joke, right? If sexual harassment (because that's what it is) is not meant in a negative way, it should be tolerated?? Wow.

No, then you have totally MISunderstood it. Women should NOT tolerate it for a minute !! But should KNOW where it comes from ! To "understand" does NOT mean to ACCEPT/TOLERATE !! Two entirely different things

Also you apparently totally misunderstand the position. NO NO NO NO NO, woman should NOT tolerate/accept that behaviour for a single moment, not at all !!!! But have to realize where it comes from, and abstain from regarding the culprits as .......................................

Then maybe you should have been more careful with your choice of language and not say things like 'react with general tolerance.' I'm not the only one who interpreted it in this way.

And I don't think there is anything to understand. Yes their country and culture are different, and the women in their society even more so. But they would not behave like this in their own country, so why should they here?

So these gentlemen come from a distance and blatantly pinch your legs and you do nothing about it?

You've never seen Swiss/Germans/Brits on holiday in Greece and Spain, have you?

I'm certainly not advocating either behavior, but the point that knowing the cultural background is important is a valid one.

Maybe Migros Klubschule should offer "Arab swearwords and anti-flirting vocabulary 101" courses in Geneva before summer.....

A friend of mine told me that while working in a hotel in GVA, Arab guests would destroy the room and break everything, when checking out they basically pay for full refurbishment of the room

Well, I am a Brit who has been to these countries many times, so yes I have. But what's your point? Brits can behave badly abroad, just as they can on most friday and saturday nights in town. But I have never witnessed, nor have I heard of, Brits behaving as described by the OP. I haven't seen what happens in Geneva myself, but have read enough on this forum about peoples experiences to believe this is a problem, not just an isolated incident.

Re: Our Middle Eastern Guests in Geneva

If you refuse candies to a kid he will want it more. If he gets his hands on it, he will eat them as much and as fast as possible until being sick.

It is the same things with people from those countries. I saw so many girls coming in vacation in Istanbul and walking in the street almost naked (looking like experienced street workers) and the guys don't know how to interact with a woman beside his mother, sisters, aunts and whores.

Lack of liberty is an extreme and it bring extreme behaviors when having (finally) access to it.

OP, you have to stand firm, look them in the eyes and with a deep voice say a firm NO!

If they don't get it and keep doing it, a slap in the face should shocked them enough.

I agree, it's common behaviour. Summer of 2001 a royal and her suite from the Gulf stayed two months occupying two whole floors of a hotel I was working in. They trashed the place so badly by the end of the stay that the hotel had to refurbish those two floors. They billed them for it of course but it does cause lodging problems when you're awaiting conference travellers in the autumn.

What is the point of trashing?

It is like those Hell Angels who used to come in the bar i worked when I was in my fresh 18. They will trashed the place, scared the people and come back the day after with a big fat enveloppe of dirty money to pay for the mess....

I understand your point, but you can be the king of my butt, it doesn't give you more right to touch me and get away from it without trouble.

If you touch me without me wanting you to touch me, I am allowed to touch you back. In the similar unpleasant way.

Ask the guy in Istanbul... Damned, he won't admit it.
