Re: ruthless ticket inspector

There is a good chance that the ticket inspector is a trained killing machine** you know.

When I forgot my ticket I just had a monthly pass but not the one with the photo and yes I just paid him in cash!
That sounds pretty dodgy, did you get a receipt? The inspectors are not supposed to take your cash, just issue a slip that you take to the post office.

If you are sure it was the same inspector, I would add the fact that he took cash from you the first time to your complaint.

As has been pointed out, he should also have given you the chance to pay a CHF 5 admin charge ("moron tax").

It's possible he was heavy handed but it's also possible that he pocketed your cash.

However, it would appear that your lack of ID made them think you were illegally here. The bank card could be anyone's and they assumed this was stolen. I would carry your permit at all times.
On the other hand, this is true and probably fair enough...it might even be required that you keep your residence permit on you at all times, though I'm not certain.

Makes me wonder what tourists have to go through if they get caught without a valid ticket...

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

I would do as advised and write the letter of complaint. I do not know if you have Legal Assurance as they also may help you with this matter.
There is no way he should have taken money from you for the fine. That sounds very suspect..

they show there passport, which they are also supposed to keep on them

to be fair on the police the same would have happened the world over, no recognised photo id? trip to the cop shop until you can prove who you are.

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

Wow! forgetting to carry one's ID automatically means that an inspector can automatically assume that you're an illegal immigrant!

The man then asked me for the ticket for my dog who was sat in her bag. I politely explained that the woman in the train station told me that small dogs in bags are fine but he beckoned his 2 colleagues over and the 3 of them got of the bus with me demanding ID and 100chf.

I thought it was very clear that dogs in bags don't require a ticket. How come we can know this but the ticket checkers don't?

And they have been out in force lately too. This week I've been checked twice already, and never have I been checked before.

I saw this on check #2 yesterday afternoon. There was an American kid (maybe 18 or 19) who didn't have the right type of ticket. They cornered him, gave him a fine, and got off of the bus.

What? You need a ticket for your dog also? Is this serious?

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

Seems similar reports are becoming all the more frequent nowadays. Time the bus and train companies reigned in their staff a little (a lot). As far as I can see, they had no reason to issue a fine in the 1st place, so had no reason to search your bag or ask for your ID, let alone call the police.
Like I've said before, officious frigging jobsworths.
Write to the Blick.

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

At Geneva airport, the last time I came back from London, the guard/ticket inspector saw me at the bottom of the escalator battling with my suitcase, just as the train was due to depart, and even held the train for a few seconds to allow me to get on.
I thought it was very kind of him and, when he later came to check tickets, opened my mouth to thank him, when he started hanangueing me for not having 'composted' my return ticket and expected me to thank him for not fining me.

I agree that this could be a reason for their behaviour. But still...
Good advise about carrying the permit with you!
Carrying a permit is a legal issue, treating a human being as crap and infront of a 5 y.o kid is totally unacceptable, i would have insulted the inspector, police and the entire country if this happens to me infront of my kid

So, if the dog's travelling on it's own, then it pays the full fare, eh?

I would proudly asked them to deport me if they don't like what i'm saying....screw them big time if their mums, dads and schools never taught them how to deal as normal human beings

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

It's over the top. For newcomers, it won't hurt to learn to memorize "you do not have the right to do this"in the local lingo and get used to raising your voice to level you aren't used to, for a min. I personally didn't enjoy it at all, but helped me, a number of times, and the sec people see you don't let them walk over you, they back off immediately and control themselves enough to discuss what is actually happening. If you let them carry on in their rage they won't even listen. I often laugh the min they calm down. I've had enough militia in my life.

I haven't figured it out myself, actually watching my really calm, local friends turn into quite some dragons on ocassions and seeing the necessity was inspirational. Same goes for any harassment, or poor service.

We used to say the ones we had on our local train line in the UK were people who were too dumb to become proper policemen so became ticket inspectors instead. Looks like their *Swiss counterparts are often cut from the same cloth.

*Although I have to say the guy that issued me with a fine was perfectly reasonable and professional, which doesn't really soften the blow any...

you need to talk to a poster here name of Treverus

( he'll say you should have been whipped, your dog thrown under the tracks and your child put into custody )
I got so touched today by a great human reaction
I think that is somewhat libellous. This case is entirely different in that the poster had a valid ticket, and reasonably expected that her dog did not need one.

To the OP. Do not have fear. You've encountered a bully. Don't let him win.
