ticket inspectors are nothing but government dogs to collect them money to cover their budget loss due to crappy adminstration ...
You've voiced that opinion before. In your view, what action should be taken if someone doesn't pay for their ticket?

My super-effective (in the US) strategy of getting calmer and quieter as people get louder is of little use here. They see it as a sign of weakness or something. Think Darwin. (Aggression is the language understood by bullies worldwide.)

It's over the top. For newcomers, it won't hurt to learn to memorize "you do not have the right to do this"in the local lingo and get used to raising your voice to level you aren't used to, for a min. I personally didn't enjoy it at all, but helped me, a number of times, and the sec people see you don't let them walk over you, they back off immediately and control themselves enough to discuss what is actually happening. If you let them carry on in their rage they won't even listen. I often laugh the min they calm down. I've had enough militia in my life.

I haven't figured it out myself, actually watching my really calm, local friends turn into quite some dragons on ocassions and seeing the necessity was inspirational. Same goes for any harassment, or poor service.

What? You need a ticket for your dog also? Is this serious?
If it's not a small one, yes.

Exactly. Not that it was easy to actually accept, the opposite. But I can have a whole crazy class ful of unmanageable beings, working with me absolutely fine, in a mutually nice, constructive way. Being quiet and calm, slowing down is perfect. Never any scenes.

But to somebody who you see for a sec, who assaults, basically, and counts on your being shellshocked and bullies you to compliance, I was caught up quite a few times, then once it clicked in my head, voila. Never changes me as a person, just a slight change in tactics if people dare to walk over you. And, I have noticed, people will do it to a girl, or a mom with a kiddo, a lot more, or when they find out you are somewhat handicapped, a foreigner, not a native tongue speaker, etc.

Nope, but should be treated as a human being....is this a rocket science to understand?

and then you could expect a face full of pepper spray and a night in the cells
You realise that cops often lose their jobs and end up with a number of nights in the cells. Cops aren't gods. Feel free to insult them, many of them are jobs worth fools and they only have powers in response to crimes being committed not their ego being damaged.

I saw this on check #2 yesterday afternoon. There was an American kid (maybe 18 or 19) who didn't have the right type of ticket. They cornered him, gave him a fine, and got off of the bus.
And it's not like they make it easy to buy the right ticket, either. Geez, those machines give you a billion options....usually I just go into the ticket office anymore if I need one.

They couldn't give a kid tourist a break? Great ambassadors of tourism.

It's important in these cases to recognise what you are dealing with.

Plastic police can be treated as such and any threat of calling the real police should be treated as a blessing. They have no right to treat someone as scum. As much as they have rights so do you. Mistakes do happen and people forget sometimes we are not robots.

As someone said I would refuse to pay anything unless I was treated with respect and even then I would insist on the "real" police being present to fend off these idiots.

I had some moron on the tram in Basel tried it with me, I'd misplaced the ticket in my bag and took time to find it. He was happily writing a fine until I said "We'll be here until I find this do not waste your time I won't be paying", it took me 20 mins with all the crap I had, he also threatened the police, I told him to "call them" and he calmed down after that. I wished him a nice day with a smile as I left him fuming at a tram stop.

Do not feel threatened by these people it only reinforces their self given visions of power.

No reciept = no pay out, even if that meant a trip down PC plods station (I wonder what a judge/newspaper would make of someone being treated like this) and FFS marching to a cashpoint? Definate no no, this could be deemed extortion or robbery without consent.

So never ever consent to being treated in that way there is far too many of these plastic plods around these days.

The equation for the train cops:

Tourists= no complaints to the city for my douchey behavior (my supervisor taught me everything I know, so don't complain to her) + payment on the spot. Sweet!

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

This will sound horrible, but at least they are legit. Back home you get ripped off, you pay a fine and then you find out they had fake IDs and weren't even cops/inspectors (they are also known to ask you for your passport and then they take off with it)

It takes a while to adjust to somebody's barking, but I agree with catalyst, no reason to feel intimidated, forgetting something does not exactly equal committing a crime. The reaction of official people should correspond.

Re: ruthless ticket inspector

I'm sorry to hear that this happened. Next time, I'm sure your phone has the ability to record video- as soon as the process starts hit record. If the fellow (who may well be nice next time as many of them are) asks what you are doing just explain that the last time you got checked excessive measures were taken for no reason and your lawyer told you to document any following ticket checks.

If he's another bastard, that ought to at least put a leash on him. If it doesn't, well, you'll have some fun showing that to his bosses.

It's a nice idea but I have a feeling this is illegal in Switzerland.

The police take a very dim view of filming them at work. Not really worth a twisted arm and four hours at the station IMO.

Well I meant I think it's illegal to film anyone in Switzerland without their permission. But I don't really know for certain.

I would be curious to find out. If only there was a source, like a forum or something, where we could ask for answers to questions like that!

We used to have a local cop here, based in Lausanne area...he was cool.
I guess, any lawyer could tell us.
