No, no, no. You've got it all wrong. Ducks QUACK, and that wouldn't be a clever joke at all.

These are geese. Geese HONK. Hence the clever wordplay about the two meanings of honk -- cars honking, geese honking, a traffic jam... (Uh oh. I'm sensing deja vu.)

And mint sauce goes with lamb. Duck is 'a la orange'!
mhm, i didnt knew that geese honk, not quack, so you would have to explain that to me first. (i was laughing a bit as i know that in US jams/in general people honk much more. but i didnt get the pun as i wasnt aware geese honk) see, its a language issue. if you dont know the vocab, the synonyms, the story behind xyz...its easy to tell you a german joke and you would not get it.

no pun in ten did

As I said before: didn't know honk either. But seriously, QUACK???!!!

You must be from a city. Ever seen and heard a goose IRL?

After all we shouldn't take the Geese issue lightly:

My 11 year-old came up with a funny the other day.
In reference to the euphamism "I'm just dropping the kids off at the pool", she said would the cat equivalent be "I'm just dropping the kids off at the beach"?
You know what? I've never heard that expression before.
Don't worry, I've worked it out, but it took a while, and I'm English too

My sarcasm is definitely getting rusty here in Switzerland. They just don't get it.
Zollikerberg possibly is not exactly a place to use sarcasm. It might be misunderstood in that place

Well.. I thought all the honking was funny. And the cuckoo clock, too.

But it's true. Humor doesn't translate. Last night I tried to watch Family Guy dubbed into German. Normally I laugh my ass off for 30 minutes when I watch it.

But in German. Huh? I sit there watching and I don't even sense a chuckle coming on.

<cry> </cry>
They in this case did what should not be done. At least not with texts in English or French. The madness with all that dubbing often goes too far. Interesting is that the "90th birthday of Miss Sophie" was never translated, but stays popular.

I'm surprised the mods haven't moved this to the 'Something Big in the Making' thread

With all the foreign bankers that live up there (spelling correct BTW), I'm led to believe that sarcasm is more likely to hit the spot in Zollikerberg rather than in lower classed Gemeinde....

And that you do not get my sarcasm is not my fault!

My husband is Swiss and (thankfully) has a wonderful sense of humor. I will admit, though, that it greatly improved after we had been together for a while. So who knows, perhaps my American silliness is contagious. Either that or it just took him a while to loosen up...

Improved???
Let's say that he adapted to your ways. Your perception is improvement seen from where you stand, but it is rather a one-way adaptation feature. You still don't know if he wasn't perhaps very witty in his mother tongue in the first place but just never had access to that witt yourself.

So he is over the denial and anger phases... still in depression or already accepting your American humour?

Ha ha... actually I think he is sillier than me!

Curiously, though... why is that you are granted the permission to judge American humor, and yet I am not permitted the same right in regard to Swiss humor?

Sweetheart, I think I know my own husband a bit better than you do...

Unless ...

But yes, of course we all judge sense of humor relative to our own. I think we do that with most things...

I'm sorry, but I really have to correct that.

"A company in your contry produces Adam Sandler movies."

What? What did I miss?
