Seriously, who in their right mind puts the eggs before the baked beans?
And more seriously, who put the eggs in the same basket?

I agree, people should do more things for me that they aren't in any way required to do, nor should I have to do anything in return for these favors that I expect from total strangers.

I'm a product of an age where the idea of class was, unfortunately, much more prevalent than it is today.
Something I dislike about myself is that, when I am with my fellow countrymen in the UK, I can immediately put people in a 'class box' because of the way they speak, behave and dress. I'm talking about native Brits here, and it's not something I'm proud of, it's just inherent in me and many others of my generation.
It's not a question of feeling superior or inferior, it's just an unfortunate idea of whether someone is of the same 'class'.
What I particularly like about living in Switzerland is that I'm unable to categorize people, because the Swiss are not speaking my language and I can't therefore judge them on the way they speak .The customs are different, and the way they dress too.
As Professor Higgins says in Eliza Doolittle:

'An Englishman's way of speaking absolutely classifies him.
The minute he speaks he makes some other Englishman despise him.'

That conditioning fortunately rarely happens these days, but there are still vestiges of it around.
A Swiss friend of mine told me once that Swiss are kind of afraid of speaking High German among themselves, you know, in those type of meetings where at least 1-2 persons are foreign and speaking standard German, because the level and the way they speak Schriftsprache will tell a lot about their education and upbringing.
So, I do not think the Swiss are totally unaware of the concept of class, as actually even the most egalitarian societies, such as the Nordic ones, seem to have some issues on that.
Thinking of accents and class, I tend to believe that an immigrant does not stand the slightest chance of acceding to the status of an upper class, no matter his profession or level of income, a funny accent will label one forever as being some sort of peasant. Tolerated but still a peasant.

So there's some 240-odd posts on this thread, and I lost the will to read them after the first page.

Did anyone mention: www.coop.ch yet?

Thanks. I saw passebene mentioned, but that doesn't avoid the need to interact with a cashier, and the OP mentioned she doesn't like Migros in her letter.

Too true. I was once refused a side order of mushy peas to go with Fish & Chips in our staff restaurant, on account of me "having a posh accent". All those years of trying to master RP for that...

Re: Dear Joos.....

I shall be pottering off to the Fetes de Geneve in about an hour to get my bottom pinched.

As the beers cost 7 francs each, I shall be taking my Coop shite ones hidden in my coop plastic bags which have been looked at by that horribble person who has to work and cannot join in the festivities.

Good news, her kids are coming with me - as mama works!!!

A big group.

Try and avoid the Thai food stands. I swear that food stays there from the beginning to the end of the fetes!

Put the cans at the front, pasta rice after and then your fruit.
I never put my fruit last on the conveyor belt. It disheartens me to see it decay before it gets scanned.

That's a good one. Threats always work, "Pack my bags. I know where you live. I know your kids."

What is your problem? I know that food that has been standing for hours on end is a bit dodgy, I have been quite ill during the Fete de Geneve in past years.

But shall try again tonight!!

Re: Dear Joos.....

I have the same experience as the OP, and I only buy at most two bags of groceries and spend about 10x less per pop. It can be a pain.

I noticed that the new COOP at SBB has the U-Scan system in place. That will make it necessary for fewer cashiers to work in a store. So do they use them to provide customer support?

I seriously find the whole thing rather odd that shopping in Europe means U-bag-em. If the idea is to keep people working and employeed, then baggers are easy positions to create. It also adds to efficiency and customer service.

(I'm seriously missing Whole Foods right now...)

Does anyone know if "Dear Joos..." was a one-off or a series, and, if so, when the next episode goes out?

I've found that if you spend about 2.50 CHF then they'll happily tape a receipt to your purchase.

Baby steps....
