Does anyone know if "Dear Joos..." was a one-off or a series, and, if so, when the next episode goes out?

Don't know, but it's definitely a soap

Wow,

Im in a wheel chair and whenever i go shopping i never get any help, even if i ask for it for getting around the stores as its really difficult going up escalators with a trolley and a wheelchair. The service is quite frankly disgusting.

I too feel like i have to rush and put eveything back into the trolley as i can not simply bag the groceries fast enough. Surely something needs to be done about this.... Shocking

Surely the challenge of shopping in a weelchair pales into insignificance after the feat of playing pool and badmington in a weelchair?
How about introducing yourself ?

Re: Dear Joos.....

unpack your trollrey with more "delicate" goods first.
dont get stressed, its no good and pointless.
i dont want no help as i pack my stuff myself
plus it would drive me more nuts if the cashier would help the whole lot of shoppers and it takes forever until a 20 peeps line is done with packing and pying and its finally my turn

Re: Dear Joos.....

I totally feel for the OP, especially going shopping with little children in tow. NOT easy at all and pretty high on the stress-o-meter! But I never got the impression she was putting anyone down in her posts or making unreasonable demands. I think she was expressing her frustration that the system (where she shops) is not designed to provide more help for the customers, especially those doing "big" shopping. Still, the level of vitriol and judgementalism directed at her was unjustified (for the love of all things good, people, this IS the complaints corner...)

Sometimes it can be difficult to adjust one's expectations, especially if one is used to a certain level of service "back home" (especially as this is Switzerland, not some third-world backwater). That doesn't make one a pompous snob who's never done an honest day's work. While I long ago abandoned any expectations of "American style" customer service, my shopping experiences here have been a mixed bag (no pun intended ) with some very pleasant surprises along with some real head scratchers. It varies entirely, depending on the place, day, time of day and salesperson.

(Like you, I also seriously miss Whole Foods with its helpful and friendly service
)

I have the same experience as the OP, and I only buy at most two bags of groceries and spend about 10x less per pop. It can be a pain.

I noticed that the new COOP at SBB has the U-Scan system in place. That will make it necessary for fewer cashiers to work in a store. So do they use them to provide customer support?

I seriously find the whole thing rather odd that shopping in Europe means U-bag-em. If the idea is to keep people working and employeed, then baggers are easy positions to create. It also adds to efficiency and customer service.

(I'm seriously missing Whole Foods right now...)

It's just the custom....
In other countries, nobody would dream of picking up litter or recycling materials or paying attention not to pollute the environment.
Here we do.. it's the custom
Hardly any cashiers in the Netherlands bag the groceries for you so I am used to it. I plan ahead, heavy stuff go on the belt first, then more delicate stuff and at last the eggs

Re: Dear Joos.....

Ahhh ... I have found the answer to this problem!

The fact that you are spending Sfr600 a WEEK on groceries does entitle you to phone the shop and inform them of this fact, and request an assistant to assist with your packing.

The manager will be delighted to help you.... So say my swiss friends here.

Tis not that often that a shop will have a regular customer spending that amount EVERY week.

Re: Dear Joos.....

Isn't that the truth! I really miss the bag-boys at Publix in the USA.

I have a husband, a child, 2 dogs and a cat. Try to pack all those groceries in a tiny cart. AND, for the life of me can't get these Swiss grocery carts to drive straight! Anyone else have a problem with that?

Re: Dear Joos.....

I do feel for the OP as there is a tendency (sport) for checkout people to try to cause you as much issue as possible when paying for your goods.

Some tips:
1. Go over the border to shop. More selection, usually better prices (fish and meat for sure) and the €uro is being given away. That way, your 600 franc shop will become less in cost
2. Put your stuff onto the belt in an order that makes sense for packing. Heavy stuff first - and ensure your bags are ready
3. If your stuff is being squashed, just say "OY!" really loud. Refuse to pay for anything that they have squashed
4. Durables and heavy stuff - either shop separately on online for them
5. Passabene - when you use Passabene and have 235 items in your shopping and they wish to do a control, let them. As in - they want to control it, they get it out, scan it and put it back in a good order. I no longer get controlled on Passabene now

I do share your pain but you can help to ease your pain too. Joos ain't going to change any of his franchised stores for you, sorry.

The iPer in Varese is close and the experience is nicer. Just be careful with your amounts when crossing the border - kids get the same allowance as adults bar booze and cigs (IIRC).

If you're unhappy, leave the store at any time. Especially if you have not presented anything to identify you (loyalty or other card).
