The lack of customer service thing in supermarkets is weird though, because in our small local shops, customer service is so full on, it is stifling at times. Sometimes I do want to just be left to browse or I have entered a shop without a definite idea of whether I actually want to purchase something or not, (and have been kindly given a couple of polite phrases by friends to ward off this suffocating service now) so I find it strange that this attitude has not crossed over to the supermarkets.
Perhaps they work on commission, and the cashiers don't.

Re: Dear Joos.....

I really, really, really, really wish... that the problems and worries in my life were so petty.

Please, just get on with enjoying your life and if a supermarket cashier annoys you, just smile at him/her and and rise above it. Works for me every time, which is about once or twice every decade.

So I have my bug-bears, so what. I'm sure you have your own that I would consider ridiculous too. As an aside, you could always do my shopping for me if you are so able to rise above it all. Save me the stress.

I know living in a new country means you have to adapt, and I have, and I really enjoy living here, but this shopping thing is just a pain in the bloody arse. I don't want to have to bother to think logistically about how I load/ unload my trolley, what bag I use (when I even remember to bring my own), which queue I pick, just to make sure that I don't upset the queue by having too much stuff. It just shouldn't be this involved.
Jeebus. Do you need a support group or something? People have tried to help. You could at least 'be polite' and say "Thanks, those are good ideas. I'll try figuring out something that works for me." It wouldn't kill you to make the effort, would it?

Sounds like a trap to me.... CHF600 for groceries sounds more like making sacrificial offerings to Jabba The Hut or something.

You need to drive to Milan and fill up your car with Italian groceries. Im sure youll find an Italian man or two who will be more than happy to help.

I have no ridiculous bug-bears. And if I did, I would rise above them and get on with my life. Chill, it's a long weekend, for those who don't have to work 8 days a week.

Ok, so its fine for him to call me petty, but not for me to respond. I don't recall him adding anything useful, and that wasn't a dig, merely an observation.

I can see how it works here - I've been experiencing it on a weekly basis, and I've found it to be a pain-in-the-bum. After all this is complaints corner isn't it?

Ok, so perhaps you should look back at some of my earlier responses, to those who did have useful suggestions.

Oh come on sweetheart. I didn't call you petty, I just wished my problems were so petty. Please, just chill, no wonder you find things to complain about!

Maybe you should read some of your own responses. I offered some useful suggestions but, to be honest, you're starting to sound a little 'high-maintenance'.

It's store policy that cashiers shouldn't help customers bag their groceries. I asked a cashier about this once and she said that due to possible health injuries, they have been told to sit and watch. As much as you may want to blame the cashier, they can't do much about it either.
I once bought a chocolate bar and nothing else. I asked the cashier if she could just and it to me. The bagging area has other people trying to load and it was hard for me to squeeze by.

Her answer was a firm no.

I'm still confused by that one. Maybe it's policy too.

Weird! I wonder why. Perhaps she wanted to keep it for herself to try and cheer herself up after a long day ruining other peoples groceries.

Re: Dear Joos.....

I have to say... I do agree that the whole check out thing is odd over here... the cashiers are too quick and the other shoppers too slow to clear!

However... after two trips to the supermarket I worked out how the locals do it... as has already been suggested:

1. fill trolley with the large reusable bags
2. pack bags as you go round the supermarket
3. unload strategically at the cashier (i.e. heavy, cans, non food first, bread and fruit last)
4. it comes down the chute at the end in the order you want to pack and you are left packing one bag at a time easy peasy - no wait no stress no back up.

I get it is irritating ... but you can adapt!

Re: Dear Joos.....

I once heard, in relation to UK food retail, the following:

"Customers are our job - not an interruption of it".

Unfortunately, this message is yet to make it this far - probably hindered, in part, by lack of real competition and high prices, here - leading to an almost arrogant level of complacency.

The likes of Aldi and Lidl, et al, may help to remove this complacency and give the likes of Coop and Migros a well needed wake-up call (read: kick up the jacksee) ............... in time.
