Just tried to give blood, but they don't want it.

Well, just tried to be a good citizen and all that here in France, and give blood, and they don't want it......Why? Simply because I'm English.

If you lived in England between 1980 & 1996 they're not interested, because of the risk of CJD. Well stuff them, I will keep my blood thanks very much.

I just checked the website. Apparently if you never ate any products from Greggs bakers, they'll take it

Which is particular bollocks as France had a few confirmed cases of BSE during the same period - I was involved in analysing stats on BSE during that time and the results were shocking. The French farmers tried to cover up by burning / burying the evidence. There were also some very suspicious cases of "unrelated nervous and brain disorders" in the USA which were also never accepted by their government. One occasion where the stiff upper lip attitude did the UK no favours.

Obviously human blood is no good to them

On a more serious note, just go and give blood next time you're home, where it is actually wanted. Look here to find the nearest place you can donate Where Can I go to give blood?

They used to call it JCB disease in France cos they used JCB's to bury the evidence.

They wouldn't take mine in Belgium either for the same reasons after I'd spent ages working up the courage to go in. I probably would have passed out anyway but I though tmy B negative blood might have been useful to somebody.

Re: Just tried to give blood, but they don't want it.

Gave blood twice a year in the UK - but I do wonder if they ever used it. As AB+ I can only give to my own group, and it is a tiny %?

Thing is, as a Swiss, I could walk in and give blood here I suppose- and would be just as much a risk for CJD- especially as we lived just a few miles from where it originated.

The ban applies to anyone resident in the United Kingdom between those dates, regardless of nationality.

Welcome to the club!

What - I have been accepted as being ... British.

But I could easily not give the information that I lived in UK for 40 years.

Re: Just tried to give blood, but they don't want it.

When donating blood in Germany in 2001 (Red Cross in Berlin area) I was told they would not accept anyone from countries south of Germany (I assume that includes Switzerland ) as well as from the UK. In Latvia, where I currently live, they would not accept blood from anyone who has spent considerable periods of time abroad during the last year.
