Re: Complain to the SBB about the posters

Quote:
Perhaps that is the case in western Switzerland, but it is certainly not the case down this end: I have colleagues and friends from several German speaking cantons, and nearly all of them are concerned by the large number of foreigners living in Switzerland. They are not, by and large, particularly xenophobic, but they worry about the future of Switzerland and Swiss identity, they worry about the education of their children in schools in which many or most of the children are non-native speakers of Swiss German, they worry about the consequences of an economic downturn, they worry about crime. All of these issues are related to immigration to some degree or other, and it isn't just the extreme right who talk about such things.

Immigration is a hot issue everywhere in Europe, and Switzerland is no exception to that. To suggest that only xenophobes and right wingers are concerned by the social and political consequences of mass immigration is unfair and incorrect.
Even in Ticino it's a cross-party issue, and most "foreigners" here are barely visible, as they are mostly Italians!

But here, it's more a problem of extreme traffic congestion mornings and evenings due to all the frontaliers, and this annoys everyone, regardless of politics! (ironically, two of the frontaliers we have at fork are actually Swiss (or dual Swiss-Italian) who prefer to live in Italy!)

In my opinion, which doesn't count much, there should not be any political advertisement/statements in any place , which belongs to the people. Railway,Post Office,Governments buildings ,Air wave ETC.ETC.

I received a reply from the SBB.
[...]

Quote:

'nicht gegen Sitte und Anstand'? Ha ha ha.

Ask SBB what their definition of 'Anstand' is. I would be curious to hear their answer.
Quote:
View Post
Sitte und Anstand means that it does not cross the line of what is considered to be morally acceptable. It's a fixed expression. To translate it literally could be misleading.
The entire SVP marketing strategy is based on breaching with 'Sitte und Anstand'* to gain attention and staying in the news.

And it does work, if the SVP campaigns wouldn't breach with 'Sitte und Anstand', we wouldn't have had all those many threads on EF if people wouldn't had been upset or were offended.

So, if the SBB policy says ads, which breach with 'Sitte und Anstand' are forbidden, then it is very contradicting that they let pass the SVP campaign.

I assume either the decision makers at the SBB were politically biased, or more likely the SBB doesn't care, as long their client pays?

* No equivalent Engl. translation, but similar meaning to 'Common Morals and Decency/Manners'.

Re: Complain to the SBB about the posters

I haven't been here long enough here to know, but I wonder if Switzerland is one of those countries where some immigrants take the jobs that the Swiss don't want?

Re the posters - I fall into the 'meh' category. They're not that bad and the whole issue of immigration is in every country these days that I think it is hardly controversial any more...

Re: Complain to the SBB about the posters

I got the family groceries yesterday in Aldi and it had giant banners about special services to frontaliers..some cell phones, plans, etc. There is a lot happening, special insurance plans, too, I think things like that even out the negativity people who do not understand European migration spill.

Re: Complain to the SBB about the posters

The SVP is a party full of people who say "I'm not a racist but" or "I've got nothing against foreigners but". In the UK they would be called "Daily Mail Readers".

Any political campaign which aims to promote a dislike of foreigners or those of a different race is not acceptable in the modern world - and as good democrats we all have a duty to speak out against such sentiments. Racial discrimination is an evil and good people have a duty to oppose such evil.

If we sit and allow these people to continue to promote their bile without speaking out against it, we are just as bad as they. The consequences of doing otherwise do not bear thinking about.

Cheers,
Nick

But can you ban a discussion just because somebody is saying something you disagree with? Wouldn't it be more in the spirit of democractic discourse to start collecting money yourself and putting up posters with the counter argument, or supporting an organisation that does so? If you tear down a poster you are automatically giving the person who made the poster the underdog bonus (and the SVP is very good at playing the underdog card despite being the strongest party and having a bundesrat). Every SVP poster you see that has graffiti on it or otherwise been defaced is a win for the SVP. It strengthens their claim that they're alone against a big wicked world.

Only tyrants need to silence their opponents. The SVP pray that some tyrant will try.

Re: Complain to the SBB about the posters

Funniest thing that shows how ignorant and incredible retarded the SVP are, is that they say that foreigners should integrate when they mean that they should assimilate...because most people do integrate but do NOT assimilate which is way too extreme, but that is what SVP wants, total ASSIMILATION!...

Assimilation means absorbing minorities into the ways of the majority - requiring them to adopt the majority's language, customs and 'values'.

Integration, by contrast, requires acceptance of a country's laws, of human rights such as freedom of speech, and of basic democratic rights, but does not require the eradication of all cultural differences or group-identities; it is conceived of as a two-way process, through which both the majority and the minorities influence and change one another, and in which differences can be peacefully accommodated as long is there a common commitment to living together.

Re: Complain to the SBB about the posters

I welcome the initiative expressing concern over the offensive SVP posters in public spaces. Since August 1st the SVP's notably fascistic visual imagery is all over the city. The latest poster depicting Black hands and arms "stealing" Swiss franc notes is particularly racist. Of all parties the SVP invests the most money in these types of propaganda campaigns, and when they employ offensive messages, it's important to speak out. I'm an immigrant here and this type of propaganda makes me feel unwelcome.

The symbolism of the posters seems clear, and it's not even very original:

Governments tend to be the largest buyers of media in any market - the UK government is always the number 1 or no 2 buyer of media in any year, let alone an election year.

Apart from that - not really sure how to interpret your idea.....no political statements in place that may be seen by the public ??

Only folks from Aargau are allowed right? Nothing wrong with them but I was just saying that maybe the Aurgau folks are the ones that can't take criticism. When I lived there I did notice that some where quite sensitive...lol.
