Problem with UZH Housing Office

Hi!

I just learnt that as an exchange student at the UZH I'm entitled to a room. The problem is that I should have filled a form a few months ago an now there's nothing free. They say that an e-mail was sent to every student datailing the application procedure. I never received it (I've gone through my correspondence 3 times already) and now I don't know where I stand.
Do I have any rights? I mean, can I demand that they get me a room or at least help find something?

Re: Problem with UZH Housing Office

Really sorry to hear that!

However, even if you had done the application there is no guarantee that you would have gotten a room. Every year they have way more applicants than rooms, so even if you could somehow prove that it was their fault you didn't know about the application, they can't just magick up another room from somewhere. When they're gone, they're gone.

Your best bet at this point is to go and sign up with the Housing Office immediately when you get here. It's free, you just have to show your UZH student ID. They have a website, but it's worth going down there in person - and also worth going at least once a day. Apartments are usually on file in the office for 1-2 days before they are uploaded to the web, and by that time they're often gone!

Re: Problem with UZH Housing Office

I've already guessed as much, it's not as if they're going to kick someone out because of this, but is so unfair.

When they told me that I hadn't filled the application they also said that only two students didn't get a room. So, even if it wasn't 100% sure that I'd get a room, I would have had a good chance had they sent me the instructions.
