Re: Flabbergasted - completely socially unacceptable behaviour

I haven't got a story about poo or farts, but I have noticed a few times recently how people have sat at the next table to us in cafes where we were enjoying a bit of peace and quiet, when the place has been otherwise literally empty!! Maybe it's my perfume! Same thing happens on buses.

Re: Flabbergasted - completely socially unacceptable behaviour

Unfortunately, not everyone (not just the Swiss) has the common social decency/awareness to move away when they are changing diapers, farting, picking their nose, burping..shave their armpits...paint/cut their nails in public....the list goes on.

Annoying and uber gross. I would have simply said: "woah, what are you giving that kid to eat?! Thats not normal!" just to wind her up a little - but life's too short to be surrounded by crappy nappies.

All that is to say that there are people everywhere who are oblivious at best, and completely selfish/deliberately inconsiderate/rude at worst. They change nappies in inappropriate places (like on the seating bench at McDonald's), take smelly food on the plane, try to cut in the queue, leave their buggy blocking the whole aisle at the grocery whilst they peruse the mustard choices for ten minutes. Unfortunately you ended up next to some of them yesterday. If they were just oblivious to the fact that changing the pull up while so close to you was offensive, hopefully they realized as much when you got up to move. If they did not care, then nothing you might have said or done would have made a difference anyway. Hopefully this did not ruin a beautiful day at the lake for you!
When I went for an EF event recently, I had some food with me on the train which stank (I didn't realise how bad it was until we were in an enclosed space). I could not stop apologising, I felt so bad about it! People that do these things without even thinking about the impact it has on other people are beyond me.

The incident pissed me off for a while, but then me and my boyfriend went for a very pleasant swim. It made me feel clean.

Re: Flabbergasted - completely socially unacceptable behaviour

I disagree - this is a very Swiss thing indeed. The Swiss generally has a very different concept of personal space compared to the rest of us. Also, they will always choose the best spot available regardless of if the place is almost empty. And as the person comming before them does the same, they all end up clustered together.

I am guessing that you had chosen the perfect child-friendly spot; shadow and/or close to the water-front. They will not choose to take a second best spot if there is still any possibility to get their towels down in the best spot regardless of how full that area already is.

I was once on an empty beach down in Cadiz, southern Spain. Comes a couple and put their towel down 50 cm away from us. Nationallity? Swiss of course.

The spot a couple of metres away was also in the shade and even closer to the water!

Re: Flabbergasted - completely socially unacceptable behaviour

The time has come to speak out!

Even if you don`t have a common language of communication ....... verbal tone tells it all.

Amazing how a few words, or many, in the "tone" of your feelings can change situations.

To Nils, the lady banging you in the back with her handbag ...... for surprise attacks one needs to prime oneself to instant response ..... like swinging an elbow backwards with enough force to repel the attacker, accompanied by a karate type yell - hopefully it hits its mark! That is called being "street-wise", helpfull in all street muggings. Practicing some kick boxing techniques is also handy - a swift kick could fell your opponent.

To the nappy changing brigade - some really strong foul language accompanied by air-waving whatever you have to blow their stink back to them ..... and continuing grumbling and casting looks of evil intent at them with expletives of your version of the SA "Juslaaaaik man! yugggg!" expression - thereby imparting to them your opinion that they are sub-humans and should crawl back into the hole they recently emerged from.

......................
My own "socially unacceptable" experience was a dog-walker who let his huge dog off the lead in front of my house, and this creature charged into my garden to chase our cats, running right into the back garden ... causing the grandchildren to begin screaming in fear of their cats being attacked.

I rushed out, saw the situation, and began shouting at the man standing in the street with lead dangling from his hand ---- too irritated and annoyed to bother about language - I shouted in english to the tune of "Hey you effing idiot! .... what the ef you think you`re effing doing HEY?! You keep your effing dog on its lead ... now get that stupid mongrel out of my garden...etc etc" and then landed a swipe with broom on dogs bum as it rushed past me back out to street.
I have never seen that man walking his dog again - past my house. He got the message?

Re: Flabbergasted - completely socially unacceptable behaviour

I hardly think posting a complaint on a forum constitutes making a mountain out of a molehill.

Did I mention said kid's sh*tty arse was LITERALLY 20cm from my face when there was plenty of space away from other people to do it? You really don't see a problem with that?

You should have began to take picture, that would have surely freaked her out.

For Olygirl, just wind her up a little and she will put you on her ignore list.

I don't know. I walked away and didn't look back. I was pretty livid, to be honest. It was an extremely inconsiderate and disrespectcful thing to do.

I actually started my lady time yesterday. I wonder how they would have felt if I'd changed my own hygiene products right in front of them...

EDIT: That was for Carlos.
That is a complete false comparison, toddlers do this sort of thing, it seems unrealistic that the child is trained to evacuate its bowels on command, and only in the immediate vicinity of English speaking young females.

Unfortunately most people do not posses 3 hands (one being used to curtain our, or our siblings 'shame'), one suspects the mother wanted to whip them off quickly and sort things out there and then.

Plus I was swimming yesterday too, the place was packed, I doubt very much that there was ackers of free space around you.

Another situation that has been blown out of all proportion, I’m sure the mother in question would have been very embarrassed, snooty looks from bikini clad nubiles is the last thing the poor mother wants.

Suddenly, we hear a really loud fart. My friend and I looked at each other. Then, seriously, this guy who was lying above us on his stomach tensed up his body and let out alot of very loud, disturbing farts . We immediately packed our stuff and walked away since we did not want to experience the smell that accompanied these farts.

His friends didnt seem bothered, no one of them laughed or commented.

Now, seriously, WTF?!?!
Farting is natural, what's the problem?

Tom

I don't think you've read the details properly. I find it funny that so many people complained about the inconsiderate smokers (quite rightly) but this is totally acceptable because a child is involved. I've no quibbles with the kid. Oh, and whereabouts were you at the lake? Zurich? Because if you weren't where I was, I'm pretty sure you can't tell me how much space there was.

Re: Flabbergasted - completely socially unacceptable behaviour

... Which is exactly what I did. I'm not an unreasonable person, but I was shocked and appalled. It's just something I would never do.

Reading the stories others have posted here, I suppose I should never be surprised at how selfish people can be.

I went to the Fête Fédérale for bands (like a huge contest/festival thing) in St. Gallen back in June. They were asked for a 4CHF deposit on cans of beer. I didn't get why at all, until someone explained that it's to stop people from just dropping the empty cans on the pavement. The thought never even occured to me because I would never do that.
