Do kids swear more often just because they hear people swear on the radio? Nope.
Possibly, yes. They'll quite happily sing along to whatever. Be that the Gigglebiz theme or Lily Allan's "F--- You"

I trust you pointed at someone you don't like, or showed them a post on here, and said "there's one".
I couldn't find a picture of Gary Neville.

Actually, I get admonished by my 2 if I drop the f-bomb.

I let them play LA Noire on the PS3 and one asked me yesterday what "c*nt" meant .
So...did you tell them?

Re: Swearing on the Radio..

I really don't understand you Americans (and brits) from time to time. What's the problem here? Back in the day when I was 8 I already knew all those "bad" words (at least the German ones). Your kids are going to learn those words, no matter how hard you try to protect them. So why ruin good songs and TV shows by censoring it. It's just ridiculous.

Sometimes itís just funny: I know a guy in the US and when he was about 10 years old his parents didnít allow him to buy GTA San Andreas (a video game). The reason was not that you have to sell drugs, rob banks and kill people or that you could kill civilians and policemen (which would be somehow understandable)
The actual reason was that you could download a mod that allows you to see 1 sex scene in the game. (A mod is an unofficial addition to the game, programmed by some independent person, not the actual producer) I donít even think that a 10 year old could install this.

So in America itís no problem if kids play games where they can kill people, but itís a problem if they hear the f-word in a songÖ

Btw this is my first post. I discovered this forum a long time ago and just joined today. Iím Swiss and I have lived here all my live, but for some odd reason Iím interested in what you expats think about Switzerland.

Plus the Swiss don't seem to need to censor as much as the Brits do. Same thing with public nudity/nudity on TV.
The Swiss actually do censor, but not the stuff you'd expect them to: The most popular German/Austrian/Swiss tv production is "Tatort" - a fairly traditional cop story program. What is special about it is that it is not a series like CSI with the same crew but episodes are made by the various countries and even province TV stations. So there might be a Northern German tatort on Sunday evening and a Swiss one the next. The last Swiss production was censored and showed months after its original schedule - there was a role for a conservative Swiss politician and the state TV afterwards thought it was too clear of a reference and parody on the SVP with too many references to cows and mountains... so they cut it. It was too Swiss.

Instead they always play an explicit remix of "tonight I'm loving you"...

It is much easier to understand us if you think of us as separate nations and cultures.
Also, don't worry, we don't understand ourselves either.

We secretly love it but we feel much more secure criticising it as we do with the countries that we come from. Nothing will ever be perfect for an Englishman who thrives on constantly complaining and yes the stuff that we complain about here will be especially strange as there is so little real stuff to complain about.

GrŁezi in that case and welcome. So, you're an auto-voyeur huh? Here's the brief summary: The foreigners come here for the money and are filling apartments quicker than they can be built; they're not overly impressed with store opening hours, nor the prices of the products on offer. They think that the SVP is made up of Ghengis Khan's followers and find it funny that things work here, but that you can't use domestic appliances after 10pm. Er, that's it basically....

Re: Swearing on the Radio..

I don't think a lot of Europeans are really paying attention to the English lyrics - or really care for that matter.

Went to a wedding in Germany once and the wedding song was "Happy Ending" by Mika?!!?!??!?!!

I think I was the only one who thought it was awesome

I've heard, 10, no 20, or maybe 30 times more swearing outside a primary school in London, than i have here.
So it all boils down to good parenting, and teaching your kids respect, which i have to admit is waning here too

Haha thanks! I already know all this. I discovered this forum about 2 years ago during a 4-week internship (I was bored at work ) after this job I almost forgot about it. And now 2 years later I'm done with school and started a new internship one month ago. So here I am (again bored at work)

Re: Swearing on the Radio..

Blimey... seems im mostly alone on this one!

I dont mind swearing generally and expect my kids to know swear words - no cotton wool here....

What I am talking about are the english songs on the radio like with titles or repetitive lyrics like:

What the F£&*
Tonight im F*%*ing you
Why dont we just F$£%, F$£%, F$£%

Just a shock I guess to hear songs from the UK I used to sing along to in the car with completely different lyrics... I had no idea that Enrique Eglasias "tonight im LOVING you" had a naughty sister...

These are family radio stations like NRG, Radio Plus.... or am i just becoming my father!

In this area (the french part) the Swiss kids dont start learning english until they are 12 but they all know how to swear like troopers.. on the train the other deay some kids were just shouting F&*< constantly followed by giggles.. after a short discussion with what turned out to be quite nice kids it turned out they knew virtually no other english!

ill just keep switching the stations... and get used to it!
