A local pub where I grew up always had a water bowl for dogs with the label "Dog beer, rich in Vitamin P".

Most (if not all) restaurants I've been to have provided water on request at no charge .
Yes, and its only 2 CHF for a tiny glass of luke warm tap water during lunch. But for dinner, said luke warm water is FREE!

No, no it's not. The added service charge from a skilled waiter/waitress who spent 3 years in a apprenteship, studying how to bring luke warm water from the tap, certainly makes it a valuable and refreshing experience.

That's a tiny glass of luke warm tap SWISS water! You pay for the quality engineering of the hydrogen bonds.

But then you're paying 35 CHF for the same tiny plate of luke warm salad.

Because, as we all know, water contains the memory from whence* it came.

"bill please!"
"17chf for the four coffees please"
*lays down UBS maestro card*
"sorry, it needs to be 20chf, we only take cash below that"
"what, seriously? McDonalds next door take maestro cards for any amount"
" sure but they're a big company"
"it's a marginal cost....maybe that's why they're a big company"
*blank stare*
"look, how much does it cost to process a maestro payment?"
"20 rappen"
"no problem! Just charge me an extra 20rp!"
"no, sorry you'll have to go to the cashpoint"

For reference, I drink coffee at this place every single day. Beggars beleif.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

Oh good, a restaurant bashing thread. I so agree with these.

I've lived in London most of my life, with short spells in Asia. I used to spent a huge chunk of my salary eating out. I spend virtually none now (except when I'm on holiday or back in London).

The majority of restaurants in Basel are extremely bad. The one or two which serve decent food have little atmosphere and never change the menu. I've had to fight for tap water more than once, and been charged for it.

If the food was better, or the atmosphere was good, or the service was good, they'd get much more of my money. More than the extra they'd need to spend to improve.

Back on the subject of water ... if I'm given water, I use it to cleanse my mouth between courses or for when I'm thirsty. Duh. I also will order wine, which I treat as another ingredient - to match with the food and to drink for the flavour. If the restaurant refuses to serve free water, then I'm stuck between paying for it, or ordering another drink which is thirst quenching - this is not wine. So the restaurant loses money (as they'd make more profit if they let me buy a bottle of wine than fight over 2.5 CHF for a tiny glass of water - f/ck you Koreahof Basel, or a few franks for some mix of apple juice and just-not-sparkling-enough sparkling water mix).

I live my life here very differently than in any other country I've lived in (nod in the direction of Dougal's Breakfast) as I'm cooking much more and having many, many more picnics and BBQs. But most of that money is spent in supermarkets abroad, and what I do spend is nowhere near the amount I'd spend otherwise in good restaurants.

Tip for Baslers, if you want a good meal go anywhere in the Alsace. German food, in Germany, can also be excellent.

Ah, that feels better. Time to eat some over-priced crap for lunch! Oh no, I forgot. I brought in a lunchbox of tasty food from home. Screw you, shitty little lunchtime cafes around Rosental. Hah.

Ah, that felt good!!

Yeah, that makes it even crazier - I just fail to see why they can't charge the customer the card fee and let us pay whatever the frak we want with our CCs.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

My boyfriend (French) and I went to a popular fondue place here. We ordered our fondue plus wine and then my boyfriend asked if we could please have a jug of water. The waiter turned around (as he was already walking away almost before we'd finished telling him what wine we wanted), looked at my boyfriend with an expression of disgust and said "we're not in France now, you know".

Bad service, xenophobia or both?

Neither. We like to call these people "arseholes". Get up and walk without paying.

We stayed because we'd heard the fondue was amazing (and there really aren't any other "fondue specialists" in Neuchâtel proper that we know of). It was. We haven't been back since because of the terrible service.

I don't even bother with thinking about restaurants here.

You could probably do a dozen threads on it.

Would it kill the restaurants here:

-to remove the friggin Aromat from the table
-to not have the same redundant menu that every other restaurant has
-to please refrain from making "Pangasius Fischknsupperli or Schlemmerfilet" every Friday
-to cook food after 2pm and prior to 5pm
-to employ friendly staff and be service oriented
-to remove the stale carpet which has been put in back in the 60s.
-to change the deco from time to time...the gloomy, dark ambience wasn't in since the 70s
-to not open a bottle of Prix Garantie juice in front of the customer's eyes so that he/she won't feel more ripped off than he/she already does
-to employ real cooks and not somebody's mother/wife/uncle/cousin
-to not price match the Waldorf Astoria restaurant, just because we're in Switzerland.
-to think outside of the box and provide take away boxes for people who prefer to eat elsewhere
-to refrain from dressing young waitresses in those hideous grandma slippers and thick stockings...the food is generally speaking not much to look at already.
- to not remove your plate, cup, glass etc. before you're done (typical Starbucks, running around asking if you're done! ) - LEAVE ME ALONE!
