Had the two debates in the USA taken place in Bern, the four gents would most likely still be speaking

Er....... do you mean that they would still be talking to each other, or that 2/3 days later, they would still be talking.........[/QUOTE]

BOTH as all four would still try to understand what the other chap said

Apparently yes. And don't dare ask for ice. Where I come from, ice is a must. We Arizonans can't live without it. Besides ice is the American way...

While I fully understand that temperatures in Arizona ARE rather high, I think that there are refrigerators in the USA also. Let's add that temperatures in the north of the USA are comparable with Europe, but people there also suffer of this ice-mania I mean, the differences are remarkable. I remember to have departed from NY-LGA and before getting to the plane, I was on the specators terrace of LGA and it was snowing (April) but on arrival in Houston (IAH) the temperatures were higher than 30 degrees centigrade . Sure, the distance NY-Houston is like Zürich-Tunis.

Stupid silly ******* expats! Want free water eh? The restrooms are that way!! You can use your own pipe too if you like :P!
Just kidding .
I too find it annoying to pay for free water in a country tap water quality is so good - rumored to be even better than bottled stuff. Perhaps, they could charge a Fr. 1 fee for the service. I sometimes believe that bottling water should be banned as an industry in all but the most poor countries.

It is "rumoured" that, when forensically analysed, a famous bottled water sourced from an area quite close to Lac Leman is very, very similar to Geneva tap water..........

Here we always get free water if we ask - but only if we order another drink too. So wine, beers, soft drink = free water as well. Never ever paid for that. And if I ask for ice, I get it - for free too.

Just for clarity. We ordered alcoholic drinks as well so it is not like we were trying to shirk the price of drinks.
To me, it doesn't make good business sense to alienate potential repeat customers by gouging them for tap water. Sure you make a couple of choofas on the deal but next time I will take my custom elsewhere.

Not every place. In a restaurant called Bottega Berta (on Bertastrasse, near Idaplatz) you don't. You pay CHF 7 for a decanter of "specially cooled and filtered" water .
The food's very good though. Italian. Staff marginally impolite at times but I need to visit more (been there only 7 times) often to be sure.

I'd like to just drink water sometimes. I personally would tolerate and add-on the food menu if they feel they lose huge amounts of money on the free water. I just find paying for tap water weird. Ok, CHF 1-1.50 for service.

Re: Would it kill the restaurants here to give you free water

I have to agree, but so far when I have asked, the waiters have provided tap water free of charge, but I haven't been here long and only know from my experience briefly living in Germany. If you ask for tap water in a restaurant in Germany you will get looks like you are asking for water from the toilet! I have also been charged for tap water a few times in Germany, and many times refused as it is supposedly unsafe to drink. I don't know if they realise how good their tap water is compared to many countries in the world! I just don't understand why people buy bottled water when you have water you can drink from the tap for free, that is also safe to drink.

By the way, I love Germany, this just ticks me off! I hope its not the same in Switzerland

Re: Would it kill the restaurants here to give you free water

It is perhaps rather obvious from our pseudonym where we live! but we were once asked by visitors from that great big island Down Under "hey, is the tap wardda safe ter drink"?

In most of Switzerland, if you order something "real" to drink, you will get tap water free if your request it. But if the order for the tap-water just is the method to save on what makes the profit of the place, some gastronomes become unpleasant
