To be fair, I don't mind Starbucks doing it. It's not a service place as such and they just do rounds of collecting. But I know what you mean.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

Many ppl from all around the world come to Switzerland thinking: "I will make much money here, everyone is rhich in Switzerland".
MacDonalds and BK (American restaurants) do that too. in the US its free refill, NOT in Switzerland.

So since everyone tries to milk this country, so why shouldnt the local restaurants?

But a smile from the waitress wouldnt cost anything, why dont they start with that?

because they know they can't / won't get fired. That's the big difference to most other countries.

I agree with everying Adrianlondon said, 100%.
We just don't eat out here anymore and I'm even starting to think that my husband should start taking a packed lunch because he's putting on weight with all the stodgy lunches they eat. Guess he could have salad but the 'fitness teller' with the gobs of ubiquitous, salad creme covered grated stuff is hardly slimming and at 20chfs not cheap.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

Are you sure it was free? Are you sure there wasn't a 10CHF line on your bill to cover the cost of serving the free beer? Or maybe they made a mistake. Or maybe you were so drunk you only thought it was free. Or maybe they felt so embarrassed at the bad quality and price of the food some sense of shame crept into one member of staff.

There has to be some excuse for this seemingly good service

I think it was probably embarrassment at charging me 200 chuffs for takeaway.

Or my dashing good looks and personality.

If you were in the business class section of Swiss at 35000 feet your situation was quite normal.

We went for a pizza in Fribourg last Friday. The restaurant was quite busy and as our kids had wandered off, we let a group take their table. The patron gave me a free Grappa as a thank you.

And they gave us water free of charge without blinking, belching or passing go.

It's spelt Freiburg (i.e. go away with your "restaurants are all better once you leave Basel" posts!).

Mine always smiles and if there's not too much going on will stop to exchange banter.

Maybe it's something about you?

Good point, I asked that myself too. But it isnt the case. Tip is already included so they just dont give a shit. Also everybody around the world who has been in Seitzerland confirms that.
(And btw I do smile, maybe just too cheesy tho )

1. No, but you will be after I have kicked you in the nuts because my water is not on the table in 30 seconds.
2. I want to speak to the manager about your attitude right now as I find it offensive.

Honestly, I have not had an experience in a restaurant in Switzerland that was not friendly yet. I find that a big smile first and a very friendly attitude up front does wonders. If the person who is serving me does not immediately reciprocate, then I will rather walk out straight away as I know that I am not going to enjoy my dining experience.

Re: Would it kill the restaurants here to give you free water

Water should especially be offered freely in bars. I drank a bit too much at a bar in Germany and was feeling sick and was denied water because I was out of cash. I took my empty beer bottle to the bathroom to fill it and the "toilet keeper" literally came in and snatched the bottle out of my hands and told me I needed to purchase water at the bar!

Seriously dangerous.

As for restaurants, had no probs in Germany & Switzerland if I just asked. Some places do charge just for tap though and once in awhile, I'll get the "look".

I think it's probably the fault of people like me. I order a bottle of mineral water to go with my meal without thinking about it.

I'm sorry.

I don't know if it's still the case but in many clubs the water on the toilets used to be warm so people wouldn't drink it.
