Would it kill the restaurants here to give you free water

Hi I am not American but we have got used to being served free jugs of ice water in Restaurants in Australia you don't even have to ask for it. They put it on your table when you arrive. As if it is not expensive enough to eat out, they charge like wounded bulls for bottled water, and I have found if you ask for ice they look at you as if you have asked for a Kidney!.i know the whole ice water gesture originates from America, but is so nice to have it in the hot weather. We also miss B.YO, if you could do that here you could spend more money of the food. We found one really nice Restaurant in Zug that was more than happy to give you a jug of ice water ( it was not French )

Don't restaurants make their money on drinks? It must be hard for them to scrape a living on the narrow margins on food.

Most (if not all) restaurants I've been to have provided water on request at no charge .

Not really on water. A proper restaurant will make their money on wine and beer and a medium range restaurant on food too. Water in Europe is increasingly seen like napkins or a fork. In Strada, an awful chain in the UK that's much better than Pizza Express, they don't sell mineral water, just bottled of filtered, chilled tap water for free. They're really pretty profitable.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

I don't even bother with thinking about restaurants here.

You could probably do a dozen threads on it.

Would it kill the restaurants here:

-to remove the friggin Aromat from the table
-to not have the same redundant menu that every other restaurant has
-to please refrain from making "Pangasius Fischknsupperli or Schlemmerfilet" every Friday
-to cook food after 2pm and prior to 5pm
-to employ friendly staff and be service oriented
-to remove the stale carpet which has been put in back in the 60s.
-to change the deco from time to time...the gloomy, dark ambience wasn't in since the 70s
-to not open a bottle of Prix Garantie juice in front of the customer's eyes so that he/she won't feel more ripped off than he/she already does
-to employ real cooks and not somebody's mother/wife/uncle/cousin
-to not price match the Waldorf Astoria restaurant, just because we're in Switzerland.
-to think outside of the box and provide take away boxes for people who prefer to eat elsewhere
-to refrain from dressing young waitresses in those hideous grandma slippers and thick stockings...the food is generally speaking not much to look at already.

I don't understand people that need to drink a jug of water with dinner. Just ask for extra gravy. mmm chips and gravy.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

I have found that many of the restaurants in which I have eaten will happily serve a carafe of water, free of charge, if you just ask for it. Very rarely is it placed upon the table without a specific request. Have you asked at the restaurants you go to, or are you ordering the bottled water when no tap water is automatically served?

Of course, a carafe is not going to be enough to provide a giant tumbler-full for each person at a table of four, and I always assume that I should not ask for more than one refill of the carafe during the meal.

Just part of life here, I suppose. You can always toss an extra bottle of water in your purse or car!

I was charged 3.5 chf for a jug of tap water in a restaurant in Bern , ( in the square near the Parliamant fountains ). They also charged 3 chf for an extra empty plate

This is the reaction I got on my summer holidays in the Mog.

"why are they shooting at me?" I asked.

"you disgusting, colonialist English bastard! You expect everywhere to be like Surrey..." they replied.

I said, "surely there must be some absolute standards of decorum and service?"

"only in YOUR mind, imperialist swine. If you don't like it, go home!"

So I did.

I believe an upcharge for an extra plate is standard as you are splitting an entree.

Some restaurants have a tap and a supply of glasses. If you want tap water then you have to get it yourself.

Personally, I'd rather pay for a jug of tap water than not have it at all.

10+ years here and I've never been charged for tap water or extra plates. Though I do believe that it happens.

Re: Would it kill the Restaunts here to give you Free Water

I have had no problem ordering tap water. If it is brought without flouncing I give an extra CHF 5,-- in tips.

I have been very disappointed here with the "Cheaper" restaurants, usually I leave knowing I could have cooked all the meal myself and a bit better too.

I cannot afford high quality restaurants, so I just buy expensive ingredients when we have a celebration and cook a nice dinner.

Back in the day, you frequently got free water with your coffee (automatically) or with anything else (if you asked for it). They got rid of that, together with everything else that would make the customer more comfortable. At the same time, I paid 5.80 for a 3dl Sprite last week in a restaurant in Thurgau. 10 years ago, the stuff cost 2.80. Needless to say, the salaries have been stagnating during the same period of time.

I guess it's the same with everything else: unless the customers stop paying those insane amounts, everything will just keep on getting more expensive and less consumer-friendly.

Restaurants are as much about service and experience than about food. I'd rather they use some of their astronomical markup to pour me a damn glass of water. It's just a bit of decency really.

I know what you mean. I like to cook and get constantly disappointed here. Usually re-formed Schnitzel, soggy buttered vegetables or something burnt that they turn over

I once ordered spaghetti in garlic and olive oil. That was litterally what I was served - yesterday's spaghetti from the fridge, a few clumps of garlic from a jar and olive oil poured over it. I saw it being prepared and knew when it was ready from the 'ding' of the microwave

It's really hard to find decent food here in restaurants. While I have a choice of 20-30 excellent locations in Konstanz, Germany, here in Kreuzlingen there's absolutely zip. I mean, there are plenty of restaurants, but they all serve the same card-board Schnitzels they got from Cash and Carry for 35 Fr. a pop. Swiss gastronomy in general is absolutely appalling. The hotels suck, the restaurants suck and the prices are insane.
