What a con... [Automobile Club de Suisse not attending breakdown due to British car]

So here is my first moan...

Upon arrival in CH with our British car we purchased breakdown cover with Automobile Club de Suisse. Yesterday the car wouldn't start, battery problems. So I called the ACS, who were initially lovely to deal with. However I was then informed that because my car was British, we were not covered. Even though we had purchased the most comprehensive worldwide cover package.

They said they could arrange for someone to come out to us, but we would have to pay a call out fee of 140 CHF plus whatever it would cost to jump start the car, in cash. Additionally, they then told me it would take them 2-3 hours to reach me. Despite me being a pregnant girl with a young toddler. My licence plate was not Swiss so I was not a priority case.

Grrrrrrrrr people of ACS.

They are happy enough to take your money to pay your policy, though...

Buggers.

So sorry you got stranded. But I am quite sure you will find that it is not possible to insure a car registered in another country in most places in the world. We were only able to get Insurance once we got our car fully registered here in CH with Swiss number plates and documents - this was clear in the insurance documentation we got when we arrived.

Re: What a con...

Lesson learned the hard way.

Stupidly considered travelling to Siberia with a Swiss friend in her Swiss car and breaking down and getting them to come and collect me for free, just to get my money's worth! Irrational thought in time of crisis and anger.

Hope you are all okay now after that ordeal?

Definitely not a good time or way to find out you've been "Switzerlanded"!

I hope you will be taking things further with ACS???

Thanks, took the easy way out. Taxi!

Now trying desperately to buy a RHD car. Don't want to be in the same situation again. Plus I dont want an ACS policy I am paying for but can't use.

Does anybody know of any insurance that would insure a foreign registered car in CH- as a matter of interest for OP and others?

A bit of lateral thinking.....but would worldwide or European cover from RAC/AA in the UK not cover the car here, and be pretty cheap because of the exchange rate?

Our car insurance is from Axa Wintherthur. My gf was happy because she could have all correspondence in French (we're in Zurich Kanton).

Note: the car was 'imported' when we moved here (but the car only got through the Swiss MOT and got Swiss plates 'recently').

Insurance is not breakdown cover. Plenty Brits have joined ADAC (German AA) because their membership fee (they're technically a club) is lower than basic AA or RAC cover. You have to call their call centre (they speak English) if you break down, but they were happy to send the AA to our London address when the battery had gone flat (car on UK plates), no worries at all. The AA driver actually asked how he could join ADAC, as he had been called to plenty of "smart cars" (his words) all on ADAC cover - which was cheaper than what the AA would offer him w/ employee discount.

Not the case for us. Had Swiss insurance for a year now (just after arrival), while car has only had CH plates for 3-4 months (FR plates before that).

Not nice for the OP, I'd have been furious and would have let them know (which would probably not helped, but...).

As Rob1 says, it's not insurance, but breakdown cover and, even though you have paid (for breakdown cover) doesn't mean the company has a legal requirement to provide it.
It's a case of caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

I was not asking for proof that ADAC actually exists …
