A) No, they are NOT going to make Swiss-German the standard language in Kindergarten as it already is the standard language in Kindergarten, and has been so always. It was guarding the status-quo.
B) At the other hand, the new regulations of the Canton of Zurich make Standard German in school (2nd Primary-Class and up from there) as important and dominant as it was in the 60ies, or even more
To avoid the Germans to get all the places at the lycee?

in reality, few Germans are in the lycees, and Germans growing up here are neither worse nor better off than the average. They may be better off than youngsters with non-German-language background, but not in a sensational way. And do not be mistaken, those German teachers called in were called in by Swiss people to fill urgently needed positions ! The problem is not new. I still remember when we have had 7 teachers in three years of Primary School and another one in 4th class, and then, as a result of my father pressuring the "school president against temporary quarter-solutions, Mrs Eickhoff, of German origin, moved in, at first feared, but then within two years respected, loved and revered. I mention her name as she was buried almost 20 years ago in the cemetary near the zoo. And what I can hear everywhere is that those German teachers do an exceedingly good job here

The Kindergarten thing came at the same time when the Canton of Zurich reinforced the role of Standard German in schools here, and so has to be seen as reintroducing the traditional balance. It in reality was made clear by people in charge that the dialects of those southern Baden-Württembergers ARE allemannic dialects and so ARE accepted just as they already were in the 50ies and 60ies

Re: Dealing with colleague racism

I have quite a few German students whose parents work in Basel. I don't see noticeble differences with Swiss students based on nationality. People are all different, that's all. I had a Bavarian student last year whose High German was very exotic by any standard, but his parents spoke exactly the same way, so no wonder...

Having taught German in several British schools - you cannot believe how some kids in the UK, still today- behave outrageously to German visitors and our assistantes- 3rd generation on from WW2.
Unfortunately, just wait for the next DE-EN football match Some of the headlines for Euro 96 in the tabloids were excruciatingly embarrassing.

I hope things are better today, but I'm not sure. Just wait for the next big sporting event involving Germany and we'll see.

yeah but Canada is fair game. It's essentially impossible to offend a Canadian. Say your best Canadian-bashing joke to a true Canadian, and they will one-up it with a better one!
OK, I'll bite. Why should Sidney Crosby and the rest of the gold medal champion Team Canada be awarded the Order of Canada?

Because if they didn't beat the Americans in that last game, Vancouver would have burned down.

Well, Vancouver has had a lot of practice!

You will have proved Chemme's point ONLY if you or Chemme are from Vancouver. I think there were LOTS of Canadians taking pot shots at Van City after the Stanley Cup riots...
