Ah thank you! Now I think I know why there are so few men who actually enjoy dancing...? .... They like to wear skirts, and then they`re happy to dance...?

I never seen so many glum people as the swiss men when good dancing music is playing. The most they seem to do is to lift their beer glass. Now ... if we could only get them into skirts............
Did anybody actually watch that all the way through?

If nobody complains this place will never improve! Why can't I buy tinned grapefruit here?

Hi All

Rant about the rant. Some how I am surrounded by people in office who are mostly auslanders and keep ranting about things here and there around them. It is always in Switzerland it this is crapy and that is shit or I don't like this etc.

It goes right from being expensive (I pay so much food or for rent or for xyz service), people (like cold, not open etc), systems (people complaining about ticket collectors to government office etc), shopping (again expensive, no choices) etc etc.

After living here long enough I feel those people just need to chill a little bit. It is like complaining why do most of the people go to Pub after office in London or who do people eat Indian bread and curry all the time in India. People taking one incidence based on experience with an individual and blowing it out of proportion. Guy who sits next to me (South American) complains about fruits being bad and wanted to discuss why he doesn't want his kids to learn Swiss German. Because it is useless..

Point is Switzerland is expensive but jobs here at generic level pay you more than in UK, US, China, India (Again I think pays after certain level like 200K+ is about same everywhere adjusting PPP but..). It is a much smaller market (Size of NY or London) so offcourse it doesn't offer large variety. I am glad you don't have choices to buy Eggs in 24s, 48 and 72s .

Expecting Swiss to eat Oriental, India, Polish or Hungarian is like going and wondering who all the Indians eat Chapati or rice everyday. When one guy in coop or in train is bad then how can the whole country be like that.

If you feel it is very expensive and you can't save much then you didn't negotiated a good deal or you don't know how to manage your budget. So bad luck.

To me the place is still very good to live, people are friendly when you know them, people are very generous and helping generally as well as on the road, it is a safe place, very multicultural in terms of food, cloths and respecting other, great place to make money as well..

Cheers
I'd suggest trying to avoid these people, it just brings negative energy.

Also, if it provides any consolation, I've experienced the same in living in other countries. Recall being expat in Asia and all the Dutch would join the "Dutch club", socialize with Dutch people, have children go to Dutch school and join Dutch sports club, etc. and then bitch about how life is better back home.

I wasn't part of this sub-culture (if I wanted to surround myself with Dutch people, it would have been easier to do this in the Netherlands itself...) but did find it very odd to observe. I had my annual overdose when attending the Queens day reception at the ambassadors residence and that would be more than enough for me

Perhaps the takeaway is that being an expat does not necessarily mean one is also a cosmopolitan.

And rightly so! Who, in his right mind, wants to have a pencil moustache, put on a mysterious middle european accent and smoke pungent French cigarettes?

I don't think it is crap, but we don't like foreigners saying it, and even English expats that say it are clearly not impartial.

Hate those kind of people. This is quite simple, you don't like it, just leave... That's what I've done, twice. When I see myself ranting and complaining too much about what's going on in a country, I just leave... I got bored and tired of Spain, I left. Four years in Ireland, I got sick of it, I left.

At the moment I'm happy in Switzerland. I love it... but if things start bugging me, instead of complaining, I'll leave (hopefully that won't happen :-P)
oohh how easy the "black and white" world can be for some people...please get real......I complain if I want to, if you cant take it go away...

Well, of course when I said it's crap I wasn't implying it is crap. I was saying it more as a neo-Hegelian metaphorical hyperbole implying that certain things in England are (apparently) crap when you consider them from a certain distorted perspective, and it's all them foreigners (and Mrs Thatcher) who are to blame. That's what's so crap about it if you take my meaning.

When I lived in the UK (as a Swiss) I worked with lots of French people- and Gaaawd how they moaned- constantly and about everything.
I have exactly the same experience with French... in France.
And I belong to those people so don't tell me I'm xenophobic. Thanks.

General info: UK is an expensive country for UK-teachers on a UK-salary. Others will inform you about other professions, I stick to what I know.

Nonsense. My disposable income back in England was enormous compared to the (comparative) pittance I have to live on here. I enjoyed a very comfortable life.

I don't understand where this myth of the penniless teacher comes from (nor, indeed, how it is in any way relevant to the thread).

Re: Hate the foreigner who rant all the time..

I will inform the English teachers who informed me. For argument's sake: my disposible income is greater here than it was on my teacher's salary in the Netherlands and in Norway (in Oslo, I put more money aside as a waiter, than as a teacher). I trusted my informants about the UK, usual country of reference here. Thank you for your input on that. (insert modesty smiley here)

Please do so.

And while you're at it, you can tell them to stop whining. Half of them wouldn't last five minutes in a proper job with 5 weeks' holiday a year and the kind of salary that most people have to live on.

Probably the US, my mother and one of my sisters (who stupidly gave up accounting) are penniless teachers there.

I used to work with a lot of Brits and they were always complaining about the poor cuisine on the "continent". When asked about what's good from UK, the response was: curry! I just couldn't stop laughing
