Hate the foreigner who rant all the time..

Hi All

Rant about the rant. Some how I am surrounded by people in office who are mostly auslanders and keep ranting about things here and there around them. It is always in Switzerland it this is crapy and that is shit or I don't like this etc.

It goes right from being expensive (I pay so much food or for rent or for xyz service), people (like cold, not open etc), systems (people complaining about ticket collectors to government office etc), shopping (again expensive, no choices) etc etc.

After living here long enough I feel those people just need to chill a little bit. It is like complaining why do most of the people go to Pub after office in London or who do people eat Indian bread and curry all the time in India. People taking one incidence based on experience with an individual and blowing it out of proportion. Guy who sits next to me (South American) complains about fruits being bad and wanted to discuss why he doesn't want his kids to learn Swiss German. Because it is useless..

Point is Switzerland is expensive but jobs here at generic level pay you more than in UK, US, China, India (Again I think pays after certain level like 200K+ is about same everywhere adjusting PPP but..). It is a much smaller market (Size of NY or London) so offcourse it doesn't offer large variety. I am glad you don't have choices to buy Eggs in 24s, 48 and 72s .

Expecting Swiss to eat Oriental, India, Polish or Hungarian is like going and wondering who all the Indians eat Chapati or rice everyday. When one guy in coop or in train is bad then how can the whole country be like that.

If you feel it is very expensive and you can't save much then you didn't negotiated a good deal or you don't know how to manage your budget. So bad luck.

To me the place is still very good to live, people are friendly when you know them, people are very generous and helping generally as well as on the road, it is a safe place, very multicultural in terms of food, cloths and respecting other, great place to make money as well..

Cheers

What's that Latin phrase now?

Rantare humanum est, sed in rantare perseverare diabolicum.

I'm sure DB and others will recognise it and tell me where it comes from.

To rant is human, to persist in ranting is diabolical.

(of course, I actually made the 'quote' up anyway - the original is 'to err is human...' )

Last edited by Longbyt; 01.09.2011 at 10:24. Reason: can't even spell 'err'!

I have no one to rant about, except the French. And the Italians. Come to think of it the Czechs, Slavs and the Papua-New Guineans get on my tits too; but mainly it's the French....

I dunno. When I'm walking my dog in my neighborhood and going past a group of Swiss people who have gathered on the sidewalk and none of them manages to move even a centimeter so we can get by without stepping into the street, but they do manage to gratuitously spout off something about "Hundescheisse" for my benefit (because I can imagine that their entire conversation wasn't about dog shit), I can't but to imagine that they really are a friendly bunch of immigrant lovers that I should really get to know.

Re: Hate the foreigner who rant all the time..

I used to work for some Swiss in England.

All they ever did was moan, incessantly, about how crap the country was.

It's a natural reaction to the stress and unhappiness that naturally comes from living in a foreign environment, far from one's friends and family.

Perhaps we should remember that when we start getting defensive about our adopted home country?

Everybody's mileage varies...

If you feel it is very expensive and you can't save much then you didn't negotiated a good deal or you don't know how to manage your budget. So bad luck.

With all due respect...

Switzerland IS, in fact, expensive. And even though salaries here may be relatively higher than most countries, not everyone here is fortunate enough to have a very high-paying job -- or one that allows them to comfortably afford the high rent, retail prices, mandatory insurance, etc. here while ALSO building a decent savings.

I think it's silly to expect ANYONE to not form judgments about the country in which they live -- regardless of whether or not they were born there. Is it that they must waive that right simply because they are foreigners? I would hope not. Besides, many foreigners are/were probably just as quick to make judgments about their home-countries.

My personal experiences here have been bittersweet. There are things I like about CH and there are things that I dislike. But I'm sure that would be the case regardless of what country I found myself in. But I can't just sit back and "play dead" and pretend that I haven't formed any kind of judgments about *my* personal experiences of living in a foreign country... whether for better or for worse.

Everyone experiences life differently.

Re: Hate the foreigner who rant all the time..

Hi All

Rant about the rant. Some how I am surrounded by people in office who are mostly auslanders and keep ranting about things here and there around them. It is always in Switzerland it this is crapy and that is shit or I don't like this etc. (YES we do like to rant and the last time I checked it was a Democracy. If it wasn't then SVP and everybody else would not get the opportunity to peddle the Horse Manure that they do on a day to day basis)

It goes right from being expensive (I pay so much food or for rent or for xyz service), people (like cold, not open etc), systems (people complaining about ticket collectors to government office etc), shopping (again expensive, no choices) etc etc. (All true for most people because they came here with unrealistic expectations based on the supposedly fancy pay packages but then realized they got SWITZERLANDED)

Because it is useless..(This is called a Rant just like you are Ranting. Just like you are entitled to Rant, others are too)

(Yes but everything else costs as much as what you are paid. So if you are comfortable living pay check to pay check not have a nest egg then you are good to go. CH being a small market so has no variety is not the argument. CH being a closed economy which does not want to provide the variety is the argument.)

Expecting Swiss to eat Oriental, India, Polish or Hungarian is like going and wondering who all the Indians eat Chapati or rice everyday. When one guy in coop or in train is bad then how can the whole country be like that. (The last I heard 40% of CH are outsiders - I can be corrected on that but keeping that relative number in mind you would expect at least a decent amount of choice in this country)

If you feel it is very expensive and you can't save much then you didn't negotiated a good deal or you don't know how to manage your budget. So bad luck. (You aren't investment banker by any chance are you?)

To me the place is still very good to live, people are friendly when you know them, people are very generous and helping generally as well as on the road, it is a safe place, very multicultural in terms of food, cloths and respecting other, great place to make money as well.. (True, true and true but just like any other place it has it's ups and downs. And as the nature of human beings we complain every once in a while or think the grass is greener on the other side. Not all of us are at peace with our inner Chi )

p.s. I think you need to find a job at a more happy place which suits your style. Chucky cheese perhaps ?

Cheers

Re: Hate the foreigner who rant all the time..

When I lived in the UK (as a Swiss) I worked with lots of French people- and Gaaawd how they moaned- constantly and about everything. It does get tiring after a while. Yes, the fact you choose to live abroad does not mean you have to 'put up and shut up' - but honestly, you also have to adapt, be positive and tolerant- wherever YOU decide to move, surely.

Re: Hate the foreigner who rant all the time..

I think there's a big difference between having an occasional moan in here or with friends, and complaining all the time about everything. I don't know the OP but it seems like they are just letting off some steam and will be back to normal soon.

What is the point of being an international person with experience in different countries if you are not allowed to compare and contrast these places in which you've lived in?

Just because one freely chooses to move to a different country does not mean he/she has been lobotomized or gone blind. People are allowed to use their brain and make comparisons; if they turn out to all be negative, well, then, maybe we can all learn something from it...
