Hey man, I realize that Switzerland isn't the US BUT when something is labeled "American BBQ" I expect it to taste like something from home, not like salt and more salt with a hint of some paprika!

The little jar of "Mexican BBQ" that is together with all the other sauces for fondue chinoise tastes EXACTLY like "Manwich" which is a sloppy-joe making sauce. We will have to query Coconails and Ouchboy how "Mexican" that stuff actually is but the "American" stuff very often is very far from it so I have reason to doubt.

I think the largest part of the problem for many expats who come here to work for multi-national / international corporations is that they have to work the same sort of crazy hours as they do in the US, Aus and UK while trying to LIVE on Swiss time and it simply doesn't work. One or the other should give - personally, I'm in favor of ensuring an improved match-up of working hours to local life hours.
You will find these sorts of labels all over the world. It's marketing, nothing else. Most of the stuff you can easily make at home yourself, it's your taste after all.

And whats the deal with the BIO-stuff?? Allready expensive meat made even more expensive cause the cattle were fed organic grass with still warm organic fertilizer? Bullshit (no pun intended). I want my doped up cheap polish lamb racks.

Interestingly, I find the Asian stores in Basel very well stocked. Which is odd, as the restaurants which serve Asian food are very bad in the main.

Same for some Asian stores in Zürich (at least for Thai food), you don't get too many fruits but nearly all herbs and vegetables are flown in several times per week and are still quite reasonably priced compared to Coop/Migros. Some Thai friends prefer their (home cooked) Thai food here in Switzerland to Thailand as they say the quality of meat and hygiene/food safety is better.
I can believe that, but also find most "Asian" restaurants lacking, with a few exceptions as some places serve the real deal in Zürich if you order in Thai and emphasize that you want it spicy.

We have those too in Luzern, but in order to access them I would need to venture to the dodgier parts of town

Luzern has dodgy bits? I thought Kleinbasel was voted the dodgiest of dodgy bits in all of Switzerland, and that's because there are a few pizza boxes littering the streets at the weekend.

I'm from Luzern, and the "dodgy bits" are a very tame version of Langstrasse.

I nearly had a panic attack when I ventured back into a US food store the other day. It was overwhelming.
I am actually looking forward to that again when I go back home.

I noticed myself getting fussy and somewhat panicked when I went to Heiber Frische in Wylen and couldn't figure out which brand of milk to buy. "Which one is the best? I don't know!!! Which one will taste the best? I don't know!!! Which one is the most popular? OMG! I DON'T FRACKING KNOW!!!!!!"

And then I stood there and stared at the milk for about 10 minutes trying to figure it out. FFS IT'S JUST MILK!!!!

Im so pissed off at Migros/Coop. Not only do they close BEFORE I get home from work, their meat selection is rediciolous.
Clearly, you've never been to Ohio: beef, beef, or beef.

Or Sweden: try finding veal, or suckling pig or goat there!

have your pork chops and various overly priced "BBQ friendly" meat with that weird red marinade (i guess its paprika wich seems to be the flavour of choise here, dont get me started on the crisps).
Marinated stuff can be imported much cheaper.
If you go to Germany and stock-up for a BBQ, you can take 3.5kg per person per day of marinated meat, but only 0.5kg of unmarinated meat.

I hate pre-marinated meat.
Though Coop+Migros will swear they only take "the best quality meat", it's difficult to prove once it's marinated...

I guess its because they refuse to import argentinian meat, etc.
Who does?

I buy it all the time!

Maybe Swedish guy works near the center of Luzern? He could go shopping in a large store downtown, and then ride home.

I agree with almost all the whines. Just drive to France and you will see a big difference in choice and quality.

ha ha - I have just been through that. Made worse by the fact that I don't even understand what is written on the bottles, and they are all so huge! Plus, there is something called Silk in the milk department too ...which I don't think has seen a cow in its life.

However, back to meat in CH. Yes, it used to get my goat too, the lack of choice, unless you are partial to watery pork. A couple of times I tried the steak but so much water came out of them, not only during cooking but on the plate, that it put me off.

The best thing I found was the tiny chickens ... but you can get sick of those too

Swedishguy lives right in the center, near both a big coop and a big micros. Went to the migros today. Same old shit. "Aktion"-pack of pork. Aktion-pack of fish knusperli. Aktion pack of chicken nuggets. 3000 different bratwursts. 30 chf for a beef steak. I got a kebab instead for dinner.

Check at some of the ethnic stores in your area, that may help, hopping into Aldi and Lidl may help as well. Neither Coop nor Migros tend to carry pork chops like I'm accustomed but they do carry cuts I recognize better at Aldi.

I was in the nearest Coop to me today and saw that they do indeed have wild meats now, maybe you'll enjoy some reh (doe?) or hirsch (stag?), some hasen (wild hare) or wildschwein (boar). Last fall I picked up some venison shoulder from the butcher at Manor and made a really fantastic deer stew.

Re: Would it kill Migros/Coop to show some variety in terms of MEAT?

I used to go to the Noodle House in Puls5 near Technopark Zurich and I taught them to make Kung Pao chicken the way I liked it. As I ate there almost every day, and I think I liked it the way that they liked to make it, everyone was happy. But the first time I ate it, they cooks all watched me to see if my head would explode. I guess they did not know my capacity for SPICY!
