Im so pissed off at Migros/Coop. Not only do they close BEFORE I get home from work, their meat selection is rediciolous.
You have your pork chops and various overly priced "BBQ friendly" meat with that weird red marinade (i guess its paprika wich seems to be the flavour of choise here, dont get me started on the crisps).
And youve got your 100 CHF/kilo chicken legs.
And youve got your "fine food" steaks @ 35-45 CHF a piece.
WTF.
This summer, back in my old country, I bought pre-cooked hickory glazed ribs for 10 chf/kilo. Just throw them on the BBQ for some crispyness. Thats just one example. And that giant food super stores close 10PM 7 days a week.
Im so bored with the food selection here im considering not eating at all.

Go to a butchers or Turkish (or other "ethnic" shop), market, farm..... they've all got good meat often cheaper than a supermarket. Or eat vegetables!

It's like saying "no meat choice? that's crazy talk." and then offering up this carnivorous since 1991, but love good freshly made tofu | The following 2 users would like to thank Mud for this useful post: | |

You are absolutely right! Horrible here. When I get bored I go to Autria or Germany and stock up on things. Especially cold cuts and meat.

Do you have Aligro near you? It's kind of like a super store. Well the closest you'll get. I'm a veg. but when my husband does buy meat, he likes to do it there. Though I wish he'd go to a local butcher b/c I'm sure it's better quality. But price wise, Aligro seems to be the winner.
And for the other vegies out there, here in Lausanne we have a fair ammount of tofu, (the really good kind is at Asian food stores.) and Quorn (Migros) and Quanature (sp? At Coop.) But I sure do miss the variety they have in the states!

Have to feel sorry for all you people who don't live in Basel.
15 minutes cycling in one direction brings me to Marktkauf in Germany. Good butchers, mainly pork and beef. Around the corner from there is a Turkish shop, also with a butcher counter, mainly lamb.
10-15 minutes cycling in a different direction brings me to Geant Casino in France. Again, a wide range of products. You can get hickory smoked ribs there, ready for the BBQ. Can't remember the price/weight but I paid 4€ for a rack last time.
On Saturdays, France also has a farmer's market. I now get all my lamb from there. The guy spent ages last Saturday cubing me some lamb for a curry - it's 14€/Kg but you only pay for what you get. By that I mean all the fat he trimmed off, and the pieces not big enough to make a nice cube, were discarded. Plus I got some free sausages.
I only buy meat in Switzerland if it's on 50% aktion. Not that I can't afford the prices here (I live on my own so we're not talking huge amounts of meat) but it just seems silly to pay these prices when the quality at the market in France beats the Swiss meat and costs so much less.

Is it really the lack of variety or do you just find it inconvenient to try things you haven't tried before?
As of meet. You get chicken, beef, pork, lamb and seefood in any variation you want in almost every coop or migros. Go shop an hour before they close and most of it will be 50% off.
It's easy to find ingredients to cook Asian, Mediterranean and even American.
Tofu and Quorn is available even in small migros / coop.
Buy seasonal veggies and have different choices every month. When was the last time you cooked a Aubergine? Broccoli? Blumenkohl? Kohlrabi? Knollenselleri? Wirz?
I live on a very small budget (student with no rich daddy's financial support) but a balanced diet is very important to me. I love to cook and I harly ever get bored with what I can get at the mid-size coop at my trainstation.

Im also upset with the poor ready-made food selection. Im used to buying chicken wings, ribs, awsome salads with actual MEAT in them, etc. Here you pay 6 CHF for a tiny "greek" salad with some cucumber bits and 3-4 feta cheese bits. |

I dont know about "most of it". Also, they close 6.30. I get home 6.45. No, they totally have less options and its totally over-priced, even for CH. I guess its because they refuse to import argentinian meat, etc.
It's easy to find ingredients to cook Asian, Mediterranean and even American. Semi-agreed. The asian section is 3 times bigger in yer average scandinavian (large) food store.
Tofu and Quorn is available even in small migros / coop. That makes me happy for all you vegetarians out there, but personally i find tofu tasteless and Quorn products plain weird.
Buy seasonal veggies and have different choices every month. When was the last time you cooked a Aubergine? Broccoli? Blumenkohl? Kohlrabi? Knollenselleri? Wirz? Wirz? I dont want a veggie stew or grilled Aubergine. I want lamb-racks that doesnt force me to sell my car in order to buy a decent amount of them.
I live on a very small budget (student with no rich daddy's financial support) but a balanced diet is very important to me. I love to cook and I harly ever get bored with what I can get at the mid-size coop at my trainstation. Wait until you have a job and want to throw a big-ass BBQ for your friends.
Do you want to get to gether and cook sometimes? Are you asking me out on a date?

Coming from a city that has market places filled with still-moving-too-many-to-count fish might not be helping... But I am very very disappointed with the fish available in Coop or Migros. In medium sized stores you get salmon, pangasius filet and... well, some bass. On big ones, you get some salted codfish in the Portuguese cantons, and some... well... variations of bass... The rest of the so called seafood is frozen... Not a big fan of frozen, but there is still not that much variety.
I miss the good old stinky fish markets
I find the local Migros very well stocked on vegetables, though! (Coop not so strong on that department)
