Hello
I visited Geneva at December 29 2019. My hotel was just across the street of main train station of Geneva, Gar de Carnavin. When I went out to dinner at 5 pm I've got pickedpockertted at the street of Gar de Carnavin. My wallet was my rear pocket of my bagpack and there was a guy walking very near behind me .
The only thing that should be in the rear pocket of a rucksack is an old expendable wallet with a couple of fake cards in it, or better still a mousetrap.

Seriously, what were you thinking?

I carry a leather cross body bag that has a strap reinforced with metal so it can't be cut through. I have 2 and would never be without one in a strange city or when travelling. They're made by a company called Travelon.

Re: Pickpockets in Geneva

There are pickpockets in major cities, at train stations, in the malls, at festivals and basically anywhere where there are crowds.

Switzerland is safer than many places but we certainly have petty theft as well.

Re: Pickpockets in Geneva

Having lived in Milan and Rome for most of my life I'm always amazed when people see Cornavin as this super dangerous place. Compared to Termini in Rome or Milano Centrale (the latter now is a bit better compared to 10/15 years ago) Cornavin seems a very safe place to me.

Yes there are shady characters around but I just behave as I would behave at Termini and try to minimise the risks.

I guess it always depends on where you grow up/what your expectations are. Probably someone from Johannesburg is even more relaxed than me (SA was the only place I felt "unsafe" in all my travels and I've been to Jerusalem when there was a terrorist attack every other day).

<<My wallet was my rear pocket of my bagpack>>
I don't think anybody does that since about two days after the bag-pack was invented.

That's because they let "southeastern European dudes" in the country.

But as soon as SVP claims that criminal foreigners should be sent back home, all Swissies are called "racists".

Re: Pickpockets in Geneva

Well, as long as there is stuff to steal, people will keep stealing. Even in the relative safety of Zug I pass by cafes and outdoor sitting areas observing people with their bags slung over the back of chairs or half open next to them, while they chatter away sipping coffee, mobile on the table.
Then you hear a sobby story of someone's stuff having been nicked.

If it's of any help to you, to prevent parting with my things, I always give an eye-to-eye hard stare at the people who suddenly start twirling around me - that deters them. Being quite rough looking, in my case, also helps.

Good etiquette of not putting your phone on the table while meeting friends for a drink or dinner helps keep your phone safe too.

If you have a tendency to lose stuff, do not fiddle with it on the train, bus, at the station. That's where I would often find other people's lost items.

If you anticipate getting drunk, take just one card with you, split cash between 2 pockets.

Re: Pickpockets in Geneva

In big cities like Zurich, Paris, Sydney I see so many people (tourist or not) keeping there wallet in there handbag. The bag is kept open and the wallet is on top. I often tell them not to do that but there is so many doing it.

In train I keep my backpack close by and my arm through one of the strap.

Lock your luggage and attach them to something.

Hold your mobile phone close to your body when the doors of the train open.

....
Think

The rule is do not make it easy, and they will robe somebody else.

Re: Pickpockets in Geneva

A technical question on this. I reported a post as being racist and it was duly deleted. However, I then received a message from Moderator, via private email, saying that the post I had created had been deleted as being racist. Considering my mailbox is also read by my children as it is the family one, could you amend, please! It reads as I was the one making the racist comments!

And while you're at it, can you give a right verbal slap at the actual poster?!

Read that message again. Usually it says something like "the" post has been deleted and your reply to it was therefore as well.
I remember once being utterly surprised until I reread it. The phrasing is not very good at first sight.

I did, thanks. The heading and, as you said, the wording come across as accusatory but you're right, it's just clumsy wording.

^This. Mods will often delete multiple posts at once in a discussion with a generic message to cover it all, rather than deleting one by one. The deletion message is usually similar to what curley mentions, that "the offending post and any replies have been removed".

Re: Pickpockets in Geneva

Is this a problem mostly associated with the french side of Switzerland? I've seen someone put their wallet on a windowsill in down town Zurich and return over 3 hours later to retrieve it and all their belongings. 3
