The contradiction that is the AVS

Sometimes the way things work around here confuses me.
Recently there has been some major changes in the health sector that will affect a lot of people. In my case it has been changes in the hearing services a 60% cut in funding of hearing aids for the retired. For my work in a small business its unknown a many of my clients are UN, how it will trade with AVS trade (I predict that it will just mean that people will end up with lower quality hearing aids) however for the retired..well Id be pretty ticked off, after paying up to 70 odd years of AVS only to be told nope.. you cant claim as much of it back when you needed it would really rile me.

What really intrigues me is their reasoning behind it.. something about bringing prices in line with the EU.. with the currencies going all over the place the it like comparing cats with dogs and when I look at the prices. and in the end the only EU country that is significantly cheaper (unfortunately for me) is France when I look about in UK and Australia the hearing services in CH is much cheaper.

Of much more interest and to my chagrin is a letter sent out to all AVS clients overtly recommending them to take the money that they receive from the AVS and go shopping for hearing aids and services in the EU.

I'm all for the protection of consumers and in the end the consumers who choose to buy overseas will pay more because its a service and not just hearing aids and clients need to make regular visits to the clinic therefore visit costs will have to rise. And Mrs Bufflo whos 103 years old living in a retirement village wont be going to France to have work done.

Despite this the reason that this thread is titled as such on the one hand the Swiss government have cut all this funding, a lot of this funding money they will get back when the hearing service providers pay tax, as well as the shit loads I pay. But by recommending buying overseas chances are they wont see any of it back.. in fact people will loose their jobs which would mean a further decrease in tax revenues for the CH govt as well as poorer services for swiss citizens..

go figure

Re: The contradiction that is the AVS

Maybe you are not aware of the enormous profits made by selling hearing aids here?
Why should we all be ripped off by these (almost) criminals, when a bus ride to France has reasonable prices?
The same problem exists here for (eye glasses) spectacles and indeed any medical aid.

Maybe you are also not aware of the help you can get at Swiss organisations?

If you have lived here for at least 10 years and have at least a C permit you can get a lot of extra help from the AVS
through complementary payments, which you claim through your commune AVS department.

The opticiens have it easy.. they just prescribe you the glasses and that is that.

In Audiology its a little different. If you were to buy hearing aids on their own then it wont cost you as much its easy just have a look at ebay.

Those huge profits you mentioned are are really the way they pay for the hour long visits every 2 or 3 months for adjustments maintenance over a space of 5 years, not to mention all the counselling involved in rehab, In Australia Audiology and psychology were once one in the same profession.

You however missed my point. The point I was making of those huge profits a lot of it taxes goes back to the government, not to mention the huge import taxes that they put on importing the devices in the first place making the devices more expensive to start off with. Cutting AVS funding to the elderly from 1700 to 600chf and advising them to go overseas isn't doing the government or the elderly any favours
