For somebody who has been known to swing towards toe-curling pedentry on occasion, have you started becoming tolerant?
Pedantic? Me?

I think you must be confusing me with someone else.

If someone from Wisconsin is talking to someone from Alabama, then I see no harm in referring to the entire United Kingdom as "England".

It would be inadvisable in Scotland or Wales, though.

Context, as always, is everything.
Its no harm maybe, but its still wrong. Context doesn't change correctness
Actually, context does change correctness, and very much so. Referring to the UK as "England" can either reflect ignorance on the part of the speaker, or - in the same way that "America" has come to mean "USA" - an example of the use of synecdoche.

The context can be very important because, as DB alluded to, if you're English and use this "England as the UK" figure of speech to a fellow Brit who's Scottish, Welsh or Irish, you stand a very good chance of being corrected in one way or another.

If a non-Brit uses the same "England as the UK", well that's not a problem of figure of speech, it's just an ejercaishun issue, innit?

In the same way, we all knew that those summer headlines of "Riots And Looting Across The UK" weren't actually referring to the UK, they were of course referring to lawless England, whilst the rest of us read on with a slight smile playing across our lips. Like I said, context is everything!!!

But to come back to the original question
  • In English, to use the adjective "Swiss" as a proper noun as the name of the country is wrong, plainly and simply wrong.
  • Whether one is a native speaker of English or not does not change this fact.
  • Whilst such incorrect usage may be initially caused by the user's poor education in one form or another, continuing misuse must inevitably bring a revised diagnosis of the (mis)user as being "not very bright".
.

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

I remember when I was a wee girl, watching "Games without Frontiers" and they had a Scotish and an English team. Wee girl as I was, I was utterly confused because I always thought "England" was the whole big island

I also had my geography teacher berating us for using Holanda. But, hell, Países Baixos (which could be read as "shorty countries") sounds just plain stupid... And I didn't want to say Dutch people come from a stupid country

Ah, the joys of being a wee girl... (still do the Holanda mistake though. Because the Dutch deserve better than being called shorties! )

England is a "whole country" in its own right but it makes up the British Isles. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own parliaments. I wouldn't recommend standing in Glasgow and saying "It's so nice to be in England." Unless you are a good sprinter.

I've had non-UK people ask me if I'm from Scotland when I tell them I'm from Northern England. Err... no, Scotland is another country...
That is a whole different thread. It is here somewhere if you care to search

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

I think people are just abbreviating it. People from Massachusetts almost always say or write Mass because it just shorter. Maybe thats it. Probably would be better to use CH....shorter and more accurate.

Err, I think you're going to have to explain to all the boys and girls how you come to the conclusion that "Swiss" is an abbreviation of "Switzerland"...

Good luck!!!

I only correct the spelling or grammar of other posters when they are advertising their services as English teachers or proof readers.

Call me an arrogant prick, a dogmatic fool, a pain in the arse or an overly verbose pompous prig, by all means, but don't call me what I ain't.

Ta.

I when in hotel receptions in NW-EU was asked, and I fear seriously, "Swaziland" ? Now, I am not black but my hair and my nose may have encouraged those persons to jump to such conclusiions
