i would say it was a non-native speaker mistake, simple as that. there are a few different clues in there that lead one to believe the speaker is not native english / american-english speaking.

indeed, the author writes english like german is his or her mother tongue.

"I am afraid, I will be let go soon, and my permit will expire in November."

- the comma after afraid is a very german way of writing, "ich befurchte, dass.."
-no american refers to "the dole" as "the dole"; we call it "unemployment"
- other not incorrect but odd grammar useage

me thinks you're reading into it too much!
100% agree in this case, but i have English friends who do the same...i think its more widespread....i see it several times a week here

Anyway, i'm not losing sleep over it

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

I think it is one of those mistakes which is made by people where they use a wrong word to give the impression of they know the stuff or are smart.

It is like saying "I like that old movie The King's speech. They used to make good movies then". Or it could be a simple and stupid grammatical mistake..

I think considering the popularity of Swiss Chocolates, Swiss Banks, Swiss Alps, Swiss Air and so on, it should have been easy to figure out that it is just an adjective or noun used to express the Swissness and not the country..

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

There are far too many uneducated people in this world, many of them can't help this and are let off. But some educated people do it because they think it's cool to abbreviate everything, including people's first names, without asking. Sadly, calling this place Swiss simply makes you look uneducated, not cool.

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

Given the number of times you correct each other when talking about your own country UK/England/Britain/Chipscountry/Brownsugarland and other variations, it seems the name confusion has nothing to do with a specific country, it's just a thing you have.

Says the observer from outside.

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

And yet most folk here still call the (German owned) national airline Swissair...?

It's because any monkey can get a user name here and type their crap like the rest of us. No IQ means testing. Same as the relative democracy of informed against uninformed having the same power of the "cross on paper".

Banana anyone....?

Does it count that many people I grew up with call New Zealand "Kiwiland"?

Isn't it good nettiquette to refrain from correcting grammar ?
Yes, thats why i didn't correct it on the thread i saw, but opened another to wonder why it happens so often
Great, now we need another thread to discuss the netiquette of when it's appropriate to start a new thread ...

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

This is an easy one, as I've seen a couple of people in real life who type "Swiss" for the country name online. You can't always tell just by reading their posts.

However, the reason they do it is because they're totally mentally retarded. They have drool dripping from their mouth, they make odd deep moaning noises as they concentrate their stubby fingers on the keyboard.

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

I've also noticed this, but...

Really? Who cares?

If you don't know what they're referring to when they say "Swiss" to describe a country, then the real problem is not them.

I think people get too hung up on the proper use of language. After all, it's the *meaning* that is most important.

And for me, while living in a foreign country in which I am NOT fluent in the language, I would feel like a complete hypocrite to go around judging the language skills of anyone else -- regardless of whether or not that language is their mother-tongue.

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

In my defense and as means of a pseudo-explanation to other users on this forum, I'd like to proffer this thought, taken from that well known source of philosophical gems, er, Radiohead:

"And your opinion, which is of no consequence at all....."

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

Given the fact that the name for Switzerland in several different languages (including one of the national languages of Switzerland) is something that sounds identical to "Swiss", it would seem like a pretty reasonable - and harmless - presumption to conclude that it might be the same in English, rather than the ridiculously cumbersome "Switzerland".

Once enough people use it, it will become acceptable anyway. Surely even you chaps from Blighty can see that...?

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

The true lazy way of writing "Switzerland" would be CH. At least that would be slightly more correct than writing "Swiss".

Don't know if it's a coincidence but you usually find "Swiss" as the short form in a thread that kicks off with "Can I live on CHF 180K in Swiss". Or "I've been in Swiss for a year, do I need to get health insurance?"

Which is why my question was "why".... Wondering if there was an explanation. Wasnt particularly expressed as a criticism (i hope)

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

So, we've had possible explanations as to why non-native speakers would call it "Swiss". I wouldn't even bother asking why native speakers call it that. Most of my friends from England think I live in Sweden.

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

I find this discussion rather silly actually, from the standpoint of names in general.

If you meet someone who introduces themselves as Paco, would you call him Frank? What about Pedro, would you call him Peter? I make effort (but mangle slightly, sorry! ) to call Angela by her name as she pronounces it and appreciate that people go ahead and call me Peg as I introduce myself rather than calling me "Margaret" or "Margarita" or whatever Peg may be a diminutive name for in their native language.

So, why do we call Switzerland "Switzerland" as opposed to Suisse, Schwitz, Svizzera or Svizra - and even more, "jump on" people, calling them "stupid" for NOT calling it "Switzerland"?
