Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

"I am Swiss, and I come from Switzerland" ... means I am a foreigner and I come from Sweden.

That is how much people really care.

I was visiting South Africa with my Swiss friend, and having coffee at a restaurant some old ladies came over for a chat .... my friend does not speak English, so they asked "Why?" ... "Because he comes from Switzerland" said I.

"Oh, is that in America?"

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

Another thing i was thinking about is:

in German it is: Die Schweiz
in French it is: La Suisse
in Italian it is: La Svizzera

but in English it is Switzerland (Where doeas the Land come from....?)

Then there are
(E) The Netherlands
(G) Die Niederlande
(F) Les pays-bas....

Holland is a district of the Netherlands, but I see no reason why one English speaker speaking to another shouldn't use it to refer to the whole country.

Aaahhh .. yes ..... When you leave your safe snug own country behind and venture into strange lands ... you have to learn all the languages that surround where you live .. Or at least the important words you need.

I took a train from here to Austria. I hate train travel, they make me nervous.

So, I checked with fellow passengers ..... "Is this the train to Austria?"

"Nein...No-no ... !" and they garbled some strange name at me.

Too late! The train was leaving the station!

Nothing to do about the situation but just sit there.

Ticket examiner came round ..... "Is this the train to Austria?" I asked again.

"Nein, nein! Ooostereich, dis train go to Ooostereich!"

But then he examined my ticket, and nodded his head ... "Yes, yes, you are correct, you are on the correct train".

Thank you.

I now know what Austria is called in Swiss/German/Whatever.......

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

Cause the English name of "De Nederlands" kept the article, but the English name of "Die Schweiz" kicked the article out and put a land at the end.
(okay maybe silly wasn't the right word)

PS: Holland is one part (now Norrth Holland and South Holland) of the Netherlands, The Netherlands is the country.

And then there is latin: Confoederatio Helvetica but thats something else

Re: Why do people call this country Swiss?

So, in a nutshell, some people (even some Swiss people) call Switzerland Swiss, even though that isn't the conventional (if somewhat arbitrary) name in English.

Meanwhile, some people call the Netherlands Holland, even though that isn't the conventional name in English. For some reason, this is considered acceptable by all but the most pedantic.

Although it hasn't been mentioned on this thread, some people object to the use of the name America to refer to the United States of America. These people are barking up the wrong dead horse and may be ignored with impunity.

Finally, Winston Churchill has no truck with any of this nonsense whatsoever. I should imagine that Dr Johnson would have found it tedious beyond belief, too. I'm not sure if either of them ever visited Swiss.

Have I covered everything?

Isn't "England" a region of "Great Britain" rather than the whole country? I know plenty of English speakers who make that mistake!

England is a "whole country" in its own right but it makes up the British Isles. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own parliaments. I wouldn't recommend standing in Glasgow and saying "It's so nice to be in England." Unless you are a good sprinter.

I've had non-UK people ask me if I'm from Scotland when I tell them I'm from Northern England. Err... no, Scotland is another country...

It's like someone saying they are from the northern US and then being asked, "so you mean Canada?"

If someone from Wisconsin is talking to someone from Alabama, then I see no harm in referring to the entire United Kingdom as "England".

It would be inadvisable in Scotland or Wales, though.

Context, as always, is everything.

Its no harm maybe, but its still wrong. Context doesn't change correctness

For somebody who has been known to swing towards toe-curling pedentry on occasion, have you started becoming tolerant?
