Plus the rugby is on, and I am cheering very loudly and will continue to do so for the next match (without making too much noise for the other neighbours of course).

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

Isn't there some rule/law/regulation about tappy/clappy/noisy shoes?

Rental agreements used to have a specific clause about high heels and floor damage.

Tit-for-tat noisemaking doesn`t help to resolve any issue with your neighbours and celebrating a birthday till 1am on a friday evening is just as much a part of normal life than putting up with a screaming baby in the apartment next door.

Hmmm, with all due respect I am not sure about that!

I realize all the new (and old) mamas and papas with precious darlings may groan me for this but...

She has a b'day once a year, she's noisy for her birthday.

You have a baby that cries probably nightly.

I'm not saying that you have as much control over baby crying as she does regarding heels and music but surely you can give her a pass for her birthday? (Of course, if it becomes an ongoing issue, that's something else)

Yes probably should have mentioned that they have form. They normally make a right old racket every Friday night.

Let's hope my baby's screaming doesn't cause them too many headaches, that would be a real shame

If it's such an ongoing disturbance, you should call the police to complain of the noise at 10pm every time they're overly noisy that late.

Even so, having neighbors across the back from which I can often hear music and loud conversations AND other neighbors from which I can often hear baby crying, I think it should simply all be chalked up as "part of life" and gotten over.

Nightly = bad, weekly = not so bad... although in a hormonal or overtired (or both) state, I can definitely understand why it may SEEM like such a heinous thing. I've been there too (although in a different way) and it really is a matter of "this too shall pass."

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

I havnt read all the thread so pardon me if I've missed anything important...but what the OP states really sucks...there is nothing worse than random neighbours with random music on random nights at random hours pissing u off when u just want some peace and quiet...

I remember when I was at uni (unfortunately I had to study all day and night as I did Law), and I had to move various times becuase of the neighbours, just couldnt concentrate.....once there was an old granny who was half deaf (death?) that had her tv on all day long on full blast on top of my study room...I felt so sorry that in the end I moved because I new it wasnt her fault....

cheer up OP, and get it sorted ipso facto or otherwise it will go on, and on, and on, and on, and on....

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

I would just second J_T above about building rules/rental contracts. I know that my building has posted rules in the lobby that include no high-heeled shoes at any time, as well as noise rules for evenings/weekends. I would be surprised if there weren't house rules in most buildings here.

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

I had noisy neighbours for years back home. If one moved out then the next one moved in. I was thinking maybe the landlord advertises the apartment with the opportunity to be loud
But my problem is not the loud neighbor this time, but the smelly one. They are spanish and love to barbecue. Under our windows, 4 times a week and without pre-notice. I hate it!
Tried to tell them to use the furthest corner of the garden but it still smells like you were sitting in an oven when they fry that huge amount of meat.
Is there any rule for the barbecue?

My neighbours have been cool since I had a good chat with them, they can be a bit nboisy late on but it tends not to last long now...helps being reasonable...oh and I suppose being over 6ft, covered in tattoos and arriving in rugby gear might have helped a bit

My Neighbours - apartment below ( American, not swiss), came in last night at 2.30am, and proceeded to continue the party until 5.30am...I spoke with them directly once but was pretty much laughed at as the music went down for about 10 mins then went back up again, my fiance resorted to ear-plugs, but as I hate using them I just tossed and turned till they shut up and then finally got an hours sleep before work....
Should I have called the noise police? I feel a bit of a killjoy but if they do it again tonight I think I will do a Michael Douglas in Falling Down!

I am going to speak to them as it isnt the first time, but get the feeling that these idiots will only take notice when they have been fined..

Any experiences like this?

Oh and if the neighbours are on the site and reading this, rap music at 3am on a Wednesday isnt clever, and neither is screaming till 5.30am when the neighbours below who are Swiss have children...

Really grumpy today fellow EF-ers!
Take half a pool cue round the side of their heid! - that usually fixes things , - i mean, you asked nicely once...............................

Tell them: "Hey, no les molesta si me uno a la fiesta ? El aroma es irresistible", with a small pack of sausages in one hand, and a beer in the other. Once you're friends, it'll be easier and more efficient to tell them to cut it down to once a week.

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

OK well it could be worse.

I have very noisy neighbours that live above me. All the apartments in this building are very small.. so I can't figure out what the hell they are doing all night long that involved jumping up and down on the floor from every room (all 2 of them!).

Still it gets more interesting as the police (no I did not call them to complain) came knocking at my door (again!). This time I was not home, and scared the crap out of our guests from Canada.

They knocked on the door for 30 minutes and were incredulous that my friends (2 women) would not open the door to the "police". My friends had no way of knowing they were "real police" as they were dressed in jeans and black T-Shirts and my friends do not speak German ... so they were not opening the door to anyone.

I was out at my German language course, (the only time I left them alone in the apartment during their whole holiday in Zurich!). The police finally gave up after yelling at the balcony that they were only here to investigate our neighbour (ya I think the "neighbour" might have heard the encounter... but maybe he is deaf ).

When I came home I found the police card under my door and heard the whole strange story from my visiting friends. I sent an email to the police and put it into google translate into German (I think there was still a major translation issues, but it was the best I could do). This is what I got back:

From the police :
"It gives me a bit to understand why your visit to the police (not opened).
But you can tell her that this was not a problem in Switzerland and the
Police also have the right to make inspections in homes.
I've spoken before about 2-3 months with her husband: We are still
always a Serbian man with a bald head and suggested that he stick to your
lives. Can you tell me this thing?
One of the roommates above you I can not say anything specific, if
However, they have other evidence, so I can be self-evident
like to inform you."

So not only is my neighbour a problem for me and anyone in my apartment, but the police now, bang at my door because they want to know more about some guy who stays there some time....... The police were not too interested in the partying all night long!

Good luck with your problem... I just had to vent

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

Noisy neighbours can be an interesting one.

I have had the unpleasant experience (old appartment) of neighbours sticking notes on my door about one thing or another and it's very annoying not knowing who exactly you were offending. On that note, my neighbours were not so 'perfect' either and I could have returned the favour and stuck a book of my issues on their door.

Moving on a couple of years, new appartment etc, I would not bother going to them directly. Do it like the Swiss do. Make a call to your landlord first. If they are unable to resolve the matter, then call the police. But remain as anonymous as possible. The last thing you want are your so-called neighbours 'mobbing' you and in the end it's you that is forced to move out.

Finally, my tip to anyone who has to be wary of the tv volume levels late at night - Sennheiser RS170 wireless headphones. Watch your favourite films in all their glory without p*ssing off the people living around you - I honestly can't live without them

Re: Idiot Neighbours...

They have done it again,

Last night from 1am til 4am party time, I went down and banged on the door, despite the flat being occupied by 4 basketball players, average height 6ft 4, they sent out their girlfriends with a drunken apology, cue 1 hour later at 3am I went for a return visit, this time no answer at the door and music blaring, finally switched off at 3.45am, fiance in a high pressure job and needing to be on her game was in floods of tears....
So as the flat is rented for these idiots by Nyon basketball club I sent the club an e-mail at 3.45am mentioning my displeasure and if it happened again there would be police called...

To be honest once my fiance started crying I was in two minds about smashing the door down and battering the idiots, this has been a reasonably regular occurence but usually stopping at about 12am, which as I enjoyed a party in my not too distant youth I accepted but they are just completely disrespectful and it will have to stop,

I really dont know why their basketball club placed these idiots in an apartment block full of families and professionals anyway, they would be better suited to a university campus.

Considering BBC Nyon are quite a high profile BBall club in Switzerland, a little bit of negative media exposure might make something happen fast. Then again, the authorities might turn a blind eye as they are sporting stars.
