why didnt you take the train instead of a taxi?
Train fare + Car parking costs more than taxi + parking(which is free if you take taxi)

That said, Zermatt did not seem car free. It was a concrete jungle. But I guess its like beating a dead horse, so we can agree to disagree

Uh, yeah, I was really disappointed by the lack of mountain vistas, Alpenhorns and yodelling there. Relevance to Switzerland generally, and this thread specifically?

We found the same - and took a taxi for the same reason.

I wasn't overly impressed by Zermatt either - but we stayed in a fantastic hotel which made up for it.

However, for us, it was what was around Zermatt that was so wonderful - and, unless it's ski season and you are there to ski, to get to these places you need to hike. I think only then can you really appreciate the amazing views, beautiful high alpine meadows and the solitude.

Zermatt town alone isn't enough for a visit.

Re: Zermatt, a pinnacle of hypocrisy

I wanted to see the Matterhorn for once in my life. Seen that, I would probably not go there again as I hike or ski on a beginners level, so there is no immediate need for high mountains.

The atmosphere and nature is really lovely, and it made up for all the negative aspects up there. As we took the train, I can't really comment on the parking point. Personally I love car free villages like Saas Fee or Muerren.

As a tourist I would absolutely love to see places like Zermatt or Titlis. As we are here for quite a time, I prefer other places like Scuol, Lenzerheide or Innerschweiz.
