I've opted to roast inside rather than open the windows so that the buggers can't get in. Some of them jump too. Bwaah.

Well, this is just one more reason why I don't understand how the Swiss haven't yet caught on to the idea of putting screens in windows.

Seriously...

What up wit dat?

OOOOOh, I am shivering just reading this. I have had loads in my house this year. Just bought an old house and going to the cellar is something I dread.....cobwebs everywhere and some big buggers lurking. There was a really big one down there last week, this week he had moved up to the living room and was lurking in a corner.

We recently went to look at a house that was full of flies and fly crap. Very nice besides, and she explained she had just opened the windows to air out the smell of cooking. Then she needlessly went on to tell us that she would never get window screens like those ridiculous Americans. I just thought, wow, you actually put that thought together, and it works for you. No window screens because the Americans do it, not because of any other reason... not tradition, or hanging laundry out, or they're a pain to put it, but as a matter of nationality. Totally mystified me with that one.

Re: Spider Invasion? Is it just me or

Screens on windows won't help. Outdoor spiders don't really want to come in. House spiders live... inside (or at least in sheltered places). In any case, if a spider wants in, it can get through very small cracks indeed.

As the nights draw in, they become active earlier, so you see them more. Most house spiders you see will have been hatched this year. Those that hatched early and survived to now will have grown to a good size.

We have one in our laundry room. She's called Gertrude.

Re: Spider Invasion? Is it just me or

Come on folks, this anxiety is totally irrational - you should only fear something that can do you harm. Spiders in CH can't.

Their webs catch the other annoyances in the home, for their later enjoyment.

If you really can't live with then, don't squash them - cover them with a jar/glass/cup and lift slightly to slide a piece of paper/card underneath, then out the door or window.

Why not - that's what the spiders are thinking this time of year

Bascially what brings the Tegenaria duellica - formerly the Tegenaria gigantea - into your house is nookie, although the colder weather plays a part as well.

If you're seeing a lot of the large, all legs whirling, speed of light beasts then the chances are that you have a female, maybe two, living in dark undisturbed places in your home. You very rarely see the females out and about as they tend to stick to their scruffily made webs and munch on unfortunate insects as they pass by. For most of the year the males do this a well, but come late summer and autumn they get the irresistible urge to get their rocks off. As is typical, being male means they're going to have to do all the legwork (pun very much intended) and that is why you see these whirling dervishes crossing the floor at a velocity one would normally associate with a sonic bang (by the way they hold the spider speed record, only bettered by the camel spider, but that's not technically a spider, so win for the Giant House Spider)

So next time you see one tearing across the living room floor, don't hit him a shoe, but take pity on the poor fella - he only wants to get laid.

Re: Spider Invasion? Is it just me or

Touch wood, we don't get (or at least see) big spiders inside our flat, but the other morning I was in the local woods, and because of the early morning mist spiders webs were highlighted by the dew and they were everywhere, and I mean everywhere. I have to say it was amazing to see the beauty of the little critters' handywork, I have a new respect for the eight legged beasties (but only if they stay in the woods).

My dog fancies them though as he does flies (he actually catches em and eats them) I try not to let him but many times he is faster.
Ditto for my cat, who has a typically feline penchant for sadistic play. A mauled spider, crawling away with only a few legs left is not an unusual sight in my flat.

That's the only reason why when I find a spider inside I move it outside (not that it works, they are stubborn little things and will return inside immediately afterwards) - to protect it from the cat and give it a chance of a longer, healthier life.

I actually like spiders. They are fascinating critters, I have nothing but respect for them.

Re: Spider Invasion? Is it just me or

I was reading in bed the other night and felt something on my arm. Distractedly, I put my hand up to the area and felt a bunch of tiny little.......LEGS

In a panic I tossed the creature across the room, and then went on the hunt for it with the handheld vac. Couldn't find the bloody thing.

Then I felt a tickle on my neck

Still recovering from that one.

Welcome to Europe. I honestly think there is a book to be made along the lines of "Crazy $h1t Europeans Say" in the vein of somehow blaming yankees for everything that is wrong in the world or feeling morally superior in every way by, for example, equating window screens with American excess...instead of it being the dislike of bugs/flies/spiders/etc in your home. It's funny, really.

I once had one of these on my face in the morning... Totally freaked me out, I got out of bed and it was sitting on my pillow, mocking me, as if to say "I was dancing on your face aaaaaall night"
