If you can get some conkers from a horse chestnut tree and put them in corners all round the house, you will not see any.

I always had a spider problem and just replaced last years conkers with this years and have had another spider free year.

It really does work.....
A friend told me to do this, and I was VERY skeptical, but nevertheless have conkers in every corner of the house now. (I must admit I felt I should have been muttering witchey-type spells as I did it!)

Surprise, surprise......it actually works

EEK! I just killed one about as big as in that video! Even my husband freaked as it scurried across the bathroom floor as we were getting the kidlet into the bath. Gads, I'm going to drink more wine and hope if they decide to start feasting on me in bed that I'll be too drunk to notice. Gads...that's one nice thing about up north, no freakin' giant furry spiders!

A picture? Are you kidding? I can barely read this thread with all the spider pics creeping me out. I squashed that sucker as fast as I could and flushed him away to a watery grave. I know, I'm an evil Yankee Spider Squasher but, NFW could I sleep at night with that in my house. It wasn't a tarantula, but it was definitely enormous. My husband usually laughs at me but not this time....

Re: Spider Invasion? Is it just me or

I have to pass in an underground tunnel to get from the train to work. Since it's a cool, humid place, it's like heaven for the crawlers.

I have to say, having aracnophobia and having to pass by combwebs that reach my (shorty) head height, or the artistic acrobatic single heroes that just dangle in the middle of the tunnel (probably while screaming in tiny voices "LOOK MA! WITH ONLY 6 LEGS! I'M GONNA CATCH ME ONE OF THOSE HUMANS!") is not an easy task. Specially when the population reaches it's peak of about 10 spiders pro 100cm2.

I usually let someone else move in front of me, and I just walk behind like a shadow. It probably freaks the hell out of the people I'm stalking, but at least I'm not the one getting spider hairs on my face...

How am I going to have lunch today

There are spiders and fruit flies everywhere chez moi.
This morning I even had to evict fruit flies from the fridge
At least here on the 5th floor I don't get the 2" long bright yellow millepedes I used to 'enjoy' in my house in the vines.
Thanks for the conker tip. I'll certainly try that.

You get spiders on the 5th floor? I thought we were safe on the 2nd floor! I'm going on a conker search!

Well, they're Swiss spiders, don't forget, so they're into mountaineering

OMG, I was wondering this very same thing this week as I keep my windows closed at all times due to the windows be absolutely covered in the creepy (BIG) buggers, but in the last week there have been 2 BIGGER black furry ones scurrying across the floor which completely freaked me out. I don't mind them until they enter my home...hate to kill them, but I like to sleep with both eyes closed.

I wonder what the conkers do. I'll have to go look that one up!

I totally agree... I really dont like spiders and neither does my 10 year old daughter and its nearly always me and not hubby (as hes at work) that has to get rid of them. Yuk!! will def try the conkers..

...If you really can't live with then, don't squash them - cover them with a jar/glass/cup and lift slightly to slide a piece of paper/card underneath, then out the door or window.
And a few hours later, they're back in your house.

Don't do the conker thing. Spider's like them - you'll only be attracting more.

tell me about it. I live on the ground floor....
My dog fancies them though as he does flies (he actually catches em and eats them) I try not to let him but many times he is faster. and just to ensure noone sleeps tonight:

Loved it! Hahaaaaaa ... I KNEW it was going to jump!

We had a similar type in South Africa, we called them Jumping Spiders cause they always jumped right at you if you tried to ... ahem ..... well ... dispose of them.

Ahh so ... the female eats the male?..and this is the mating season? Thanks, this thread has solved the mystery for me......

I had two lovely specimens with huge webs amongst my tomato plants - the original one (the guy? he was bigger) and then a slightly smaller one moved in .....they would politely move away when I came to water the plants ..... but now I see the other (the big guy) has sort-of vanished ..... presumably he was eaten?

Everyone here assures me that the spiders here are NOT poisonous .... even if they bite you, it`s just their self-defence.

Apparently the unusually warm Spring caused a population boom in the spider world.

On the plus side - there weren't many flies and mozzies around during the summer, were there?

Now they're just looking for somewhere cosy and warm for the chilly Autumn nights. Ahhh.... poor little fellas.

are you serious? man ive been eatin ALIVE by the mosquitos this year, worst year ive ever had. over the last week ive accumulated 11 bites from my right elbow to my finger tips (i sleep with my right arm under my pillow so the arm is like a buffet for the horrible creatures.

ive smashed so many blood filled 'squitos on the wall that if id not cleaned up their bloody remains the walls would look like they had acne at this point. every night i kill more than 1 in the bedroom and they still are around.

granted i live a few hundred meters from the lake but i dont remember it ever being this bad. makes me wonder if my downstairs neighbor has a drum of water on his porch or something that they're breeding in.

anyone else notice this too? while ive not noticed too many spiders this year, im DYING from the mosquitos!

(and the worst part is...they leave my wife alone and only eat me)

I've had only four mosquito bites this year. Three last Saturday night - two of which were on my little toe!

I thought female spiders were always bigger than the male?

Fixed that for you...

Oh dear, it sounds like you've had it bad - we've not had any kind of flying pests this year but, then again, our windows are adorned by lots of spiders so it seems they are standing guard.

Some of them are real fatties, too, so they must be getting well fed!

Shall I send a few of my eight-legged friends over to you to take care of your mosquito problem..?

Not always, according to my late Biology books. I'd give you picture samples, but the thought of googling it is already freaking me out... Brrrrrrrrr... What is that shadow there...

Oh yes.... this year is a baddie. I was totally chuffed that I'd never seen one in my current flat - maybe I became complacent. ... I returned from a working week in Africa to a monster in my kitchen sink! It was such a horror that 3 weeks later I still get the wobbles in that part of the kitchen.
