Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

So yesterday i was at a specialist to have my eye looked at. They discovered something and wanted to send me to a hausartz for a blood test...however in Zurich it appears all doctors close on thursdays afternoon and some are not even open on thursdays! My only option was wait till today or go to the emergency room.

I don't understand the point of this...do people not get sick or need medical care on thursdays? Why not just stack it so that different doctors are closed on different days???

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

Some doctors work on Thursdays, mine does for instance.

But it's true that, traditionally, doctors don't work on Thursdays. Some do work on Saturday however (or part of), and they usually do very long days the rest of the week.

P.S.: before you complain about this too, hairdressers are normally closed on Mondays

Many doctors use this free time to attend thursday courses and inform themselves of all that is new. They are not just sitting at home. Plus the fact that there is always a doctor on covering duty.

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

the answer is to call your doctor's number and listen to the answering machine message.

there's always the walk-in at the main station in Zurich if you can't wait.

if you can't wait then your complaint is valid; if this could wait until today then.........

by the way, people in Switzerland tend to plan their ailments and make appointments well in advance

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

My 'Hausarzt' works three days a week, three weeks a month. The waiting time for an appointment is ca 4 months.

By which time whatever ailed you has likely cured itself.

I say Hausarzt with a touch of sarcasm because I only list her as such for the sake of filling out forms, she was the only doctor in the area accepting new patients. 99% of the time I end up going to the walk-in clinic at the ZH HB, a good hour away. The times I've been truly ill have never conveniently fallen on one of the few Mondays through Wednesdays the doctor is avaialble.

I realize that the fault is mine; were I better integrated I would have figured out how to plan all illnesses sufficiently in advance.

---

The recent proposal by the Bundesrat to raise the co-pay on standard insurance model policies in order to encourage people to use the Hausarzt/Managed Care model worries me a bit - there are not enough GPs in many areas as it is...

I bet the people who conduct the mercer studies on quality of life never took that into consideration either when summing up the "availability of goods and services" segment.

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

My daughters doctor only works 80 % too, he takes every Tuesday off.

He uses his time in an facilty used to train good medical practices for people in less developed countries, he also spends at least 3 weeks a year in Africa doing surgery and general practioning. All his time is donated free of charge, along with a lot of pills and drugs he fleeces the pharma companies for also free of charge.

Do i begrudge my Doctor a day off in the week, no i certainly don't and i support him in several other ways too.

Doctors are not what are missing in Switzerland, indeed there are so mnany that to open a new medical practice an old one needs to shut down.

If your Doc is not available on Thursdays, either wait until Friday for what appears to be a "non-urgent" blood test or find another doctor !

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

Every doctor I've been to here has had Thursdays off (we have a wide range of medical needs!)
I don't begrudge the Doctors having a day off, of course not. I do find it odd though that so many of them have the same day off, making it more difficult to see a doctor if you happen to be ill on a Thursday.

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

When I lived in the UK most doctors had Saturdays off. It's annoying when you work Monday to Friday and need to see the docto,r to have to take time off work for something that isn't an emergency. Plus here you can go any Doctor you want to.

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

Our Doctor also has Thursdays off- so did our GP in the UK btw. We all know this, so we know not to make routine appointments on a Thursday. For emergencies our local paper has the list of who is on call on Thursdays and at week-ends for our area. Same for chemist's.

A huge number of ailments will cure themselves without seeing a doctor and without medicine. That's great isn't it? Take the common cold - 7 days without a doctors visit or antibiotics, and 1 week with. Recent Swiss statistics indicate that 30%, or 1800 tons- of medicines prescribed end up in the bin. This represents 10% of total health cost (and huge damage to the environment with direct effects on wildlife and humans too).
If you Doctor works part-time and it does not suit you, why not vote with your feet and go elsewhere, I wonder?

Re: Doctor's closed on Thursdays!

Many doctors have theatre days where they are not in the office but operating on their patients. My gynae is only in the office 2 days a week but is working from one of her hospitals or clinics the rest of the week.

My husband's doctor is only in the office a 2 or 3 days a week because he is operating the rest of the time.

There is an emergency number you can call at both of these practices and they usually get back to you as soon as they can. Alternatively they often have more than one doctor at the practice who will try to fit you in, if necessary.

This is hardly surprising, it's rather simple mathmatics i think.

You get perscribed some pills, one a day for 7 days, yet the pills come is a blister of 10......

30% waste is inevitable is most cases, the drug companies love it !

G.P.s don't usually operate or have theatre days but are still mostly closed on a Thursday!

Too bad. But working on Saturdays, of course, is ok.

Most GPs do not operate, but many have trainees, students, have regular courses and have to run and plan their business. They also spend hours doing Insurance reports and loads of other admin. And in the countryside are still regularly on call at night and week-ends on a rosta.

Not all physicians work full time, and many offices close one afternoon or so a week. There's always the notfall doc.

My doctor in Basel would spend one day a week doing paperwork for the most part. There was always a doctor you could call for house calls pretty much any other time. Once I even had a house call here in CH for a doctor myself. I was amazed that they still do that here.
